Stocks surge after eurozone agreement

Updated at 12:45 p.m. ET: Stocks moved sharply higher Friday, mounting one of their strongest rallies of the year after eurozone leaders agreed to allow rescue funds to be used to stabilize the region's banks.

Details of the agreement, which includes the creation of a single supervisory body for euro area banks, remain to be worked out.

Still, Italian and Spanish borrowing costs fell as market expectation for any action during a two-day European Union summit had all but vanished.

The Dow Jones industrial average was lately up over 200 points.

"We've gotten used to being underwhelmed by the outcomes, so with little to no expectations for success, the fact that it appears we are going to get something substantial is a real important positive for the market in the near term," said Art Hogan, managing director of Lazard Capital Markets in New York.

"It's inching closer to a banking union and the closer we get to a banking union would put (the EU) well on the road to a fiscal union."

Jason Pride, director of investment strategy at Glenmede, called the EU agreement is ?another of those incremental steps in the right direction.?

?The EU gets together and puts together an extra step toward fiscal union,? he told CNBC. ?We are getting closer and closer to a final solution, but were not there yet.?

Equities and other risky assets have recently been weighed by concerns that stubbornly high borrowing costs in Spain and Italy could force the fourth- and third-largest economies in the bloc to seek bailouts.

Trading could be volatile and see higher volumes as managers square positions ahead of the end of the second quarter. The outperformance of bonds in the past three months could trigger inflows into stocks and extend the expected rally.

In economic news, a report showed consumer spending was flat in May for the first time in five months as Americans eased off on vehicle purchases amid tepid wage growth, but subsiding inflation pressures should keep demand supported.

The Commerce Department said April's consumer spending was revised down to show only a 0.1 percent rise instead of the previously reported 0.3 percent gain.

Weak consumer spending in May also reflected tepid sales at service stations as the pump price of gasoline fell from lofty levels early in the year.

Hospitals and insurers providing Medicaid plans for the poor were the main corporate winners from the U.S. Supreme Court's decision Thursday to uphold President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, as they prepare to see an influx of customers with no prior access to healthcare.

U.S.-traded shares of Research in Motion tumbled in the wake of the company's decision Thursday to delay the make-or-break launch of its next-generation BlackBerry phones until next year.

Nike shares dropped one day after the world's largest sportswear maker missed quarterly profit estimates for the first time in at least two years.

Shares of KB Homes rallied after the fifth-largest U.S. homebuilder reported a narrower second-quarter loss, helped by higher sale prices and net orders.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Emails show Penn State's former president Graham Spanier agreed not to take allegations of sex abuse against ex-assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky to authorities but worried university officials would be "vulnerable" for failing to report it, a news organization has reported.

The emails followed a graduate assistant's 2001 report he saw Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the team locker room shower, CNN reported. The existence of the emails was first reported earlier this month by NBC.

The emails show athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz intended to report the allegation, then reconsidered. Spanier responded that he was "supportive" of their plan, but he worried they might "become vulnerable for not having reported it."

Sandusky was convicted this month of 45 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys. The scandal led to the ouster of Spanier and revered coach Joe Paterno and charges against Curley and Schultz, who are accused of perjury for their grand jury testimony and failing to properly report suspected child abuse. Spanier hasn't been charged.

The timing of their change in plans ? coming after Curley's discussion with Paterno ? raises questions about whether the coach was more involved than he said in the decision.

The CNN report cites an email from Schultz to Curley on Feb. 26, 2001, 16 days after graduate assistant Mike McQueary told veteran coach Joe Paterno about the shower assault. Schultz suggests bringing the allegation to the attention of Sandusky, Sandusky's charity and the Department of Welfare, which investigates suspected child abuse, according to the report.

But the next night, Curley sent an email to Spanier, saying that after thinking about it more and talking to Paterno, he was "uncomfortable" with that plan and wanted to work with Sandusky before contacting authorities, the report said.

If Sandusky is cooperative, Curley's email said, "we would work with him. .... If not, we do not have a choice and will inform the two groups," according to the report.

Spanier wrote back and agreed with that approach, calling it "humane and a reasonable way to proceed," according to the report. But he also worried about the consequences.

"The only downside for us is if message isn't 'heard' and acted upon and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it, but that can be assessed down the road," the email said, according to CNN.

Spanier's attorney didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Saturday.

The timing of their change in plans ? coming after Curley's discussion with Paterno ? raises questions about whether the coach was more involved than he said in the decision.

Wick Sollers, the lawyer for the Paterno family, said in a statement Saturday that it would be inappropriate for the family to comment on the contents of the emails because the family didn't possess them.

"To be clear, the emails in question did not originate with Joe Paterno or go to him as he never personally utilized email," Sollers said.

Schultz and Curley's lawyers on Saturday echoed recent comments by Gov. Tom Corbett about the need for a solid case before charging Sandusky. Corbett began the investigation in 2009 when he was attorney general.

"For Curley, Schultz, Spanier and Paterno, the responsible and 'humane' thing to do was, like Governor Corbett, to carefully and responsibly assess the best way to handle vague, but troubling allegations," the lawyers said. "Faced with tough situations, good people try to do their best to make the right decisions."

Paterno, ousted by the school's board of trustees for what was called his "failure of leadership" surrounding allegations against Sandusky, died of lung cancer in January. After Sandusky's arrest, Paterno said through a spokesman that he reported the allegation to the head of his department and "that was the last time the matter was brought to my attention until this investigation and I assumed that the men I referred it to handled the matter appropriately."

Sollers, the Paterno family lawyer, said Saturday that Paterno testified truthfully and to the best of his recollection to the grand jury. He said Paterno believed the matter would be "thoroughly and professionally investigated" and that the coach "did not interfere with or attempt to compromise any investigation."

Schultz, 62, and Curley, 58, deny the allegations and have asked a judge to dismiss the charges. A status conference for their case is scheduled for July 11.

Spanier sued Penn State in May to try to get copies of his email traffic from 1998 to 2004, citing the pending investigation being conducted on the university by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Two weeks ago, lawyers for Penn State asked a judge to throw out the lawsuit and said the attorney general's office, which is prosecuting Curley and Schultz, had asked them not to provide Spanier with the emails.

Czech "Science Is Beautiful" photo and illustration competition explores the wondrous worlds discovered via scientific investigation

Life is filled with unexpected moments of beauty, something those on a lab bench know just as well as any poet. The third annual Science Is Beautiful competition at Charles University in Prague allowed students and faculty to share these moments through photographs, digital imagery and illustration.

"What is beautiful about science?" asked Bohuslav Ga?, dean of the university's Faculty of Science, which organized the competition, during his introductory speech at the exhibition of winning entries. "Two things: the enchantment in the discovery of the unknown and the delight in the elegance of ideas and shapes. The last one we can fully perceive in the present exhibition."

The contest, which debuted in 2009, aims to share science's esthetic with the general public, raising awareness of the marvels scientists encounter daily. The winning entries cross disciplines, setting mathematical models and crustacean anatomy side by side. Each image blurs the distinction between art and science, from a da Vinci?esque painting of a fetus in utero, to a photograph of magnified mineral surface with a palette that would have pleased Kandinsky.

The competition received 281 entries, and jurists included a number of prominent Czech scientists and artists, including a singer?songwriter-cum-dragonfly-photographer as well as the founder of the Digital Imaging Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. In addition, the general public could comment on and rate entries online to elect a people's choice winner, which was announced alongside the jury's selections.

Winners could place in one of four categories: scientific microphotography, scientific photography, scientific illustration or virtual nature. In addition, the jury chose a grand prize?winner who received 12,000 Czech crowns.

The jury announced winners of the 2011 competition on December 14, 2011. This past May, the Czech edition of Scientific American shared a selection of winners and other outstanding entries. You can see more images from 2011 and previous years at the competition's Web site (in Czech).

file. Specifically, when handling the karaoke XML element the code within
QuickTime3GPP.qtx does not properly validate the length of the data within
specific sub-fields. By providing specially crafted data, the code can be
made to copy too much data into a fixed-length buffer on the stack.
Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute
arbitrary code under the context of the user running Quicktime.

Orange says business survival linked to energy consumption

Telecommunications giant Orange has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions by 20% and energy consumption by 15% between 2006 and 2020.

The company's latest Corporate Social Responsibility Report declares that, in a world with limited natural resources, companies will only be able to ensure their long-term success by controlling their energy consumption and reducing the environmental impact of the life cycles of their products and services.

"For Orange, that means reducing the environmental impact of our operations by lowering greenhouse gas emissions," states the report.

"Optimising waste management, adopting eco-friendly products and usage, and developing innovative products and services that allow individuals and companies to be greener citizens."

Practical Orange steps since 2009 have included reducing the energy consumption of networks, information systems and buildings; deploying solutions that rely on renewable energy and reducing emissions caused by vehicles and employee business trips.

Reported results from such measures include 225 GWh saved in three years through improved infrastructures; 25 million litres of fuel and 67,000 tons of CO2 emissions saved per year due to setting up more than 2,000 company solar sites and 16 million litres of fuel saved, in 2011 alone, due to the company's renewed vehicle fleet.

Lakers shore up defense at NBA draft

The Lakers' desire to become more of the stout defensive team that Mike Brown is used to coaching could be seen in their two second-round draft picks Thursday night.

The Lakers bought the 55th overall pick from Dallas to take guard Darius Johnson-Odom. He is only 6-foot-2, the major drawback, but he's 215 pounds and strong enough to compete right away at the NBA level.

He averaged 18.3 points and just 2.7 assists for Marquette as a senior -- similar to his numbers as a junior (15.8 points, 2.4 assists) -- and he has a very good left-handed outside shot. Marquette went 24-5 last season. As a sophomore, he was already the team's Defensive Player of the Year.

But if Johnson-Odom can't play point guard, it will be tricky for the Lakers to figure out how to get him on the court to guard people. The Lakers in the second round last year took offensive-minded Andrew Goudelock, a 6-3 shooting guard who plays a little point guard, last season -- in addition to a true point guard in Darius Morris.

In a new business world where the Lakers don't have the salary-cap exceptions to throw at free agents or the money overall to spend as they once did, they are looking for more ways to add talent.They think they did that by buying the pick to get Johnson-Odom. He could be likened to ex-Laker Derek Fisher in his strong physique, left-handed shot and winning history except Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak described Johnson-Odom as ridiculously athletic.Johnson-Odom said he has been compared to James Harden despite Harden's height advantage. Johnson-Odom also has the middle name Earvin, which he said his mom gave him because of Lakers legend Earvin Magic Johnson.I wouldn't tell my dad this, but I think she kinda liked him, Johnson-Odom said.Kupchak said the Lakers viewed Johnson-Odom as someone who should go in the top 30 or 40 of the draft -- about the range where a team would expect a draftee is more likely than not to make the roster. Johnson-Odom conceded he lacks polished point-guard skills and traditional shooting-guard height, but he said: I always find a way to win.Johnson-Odom could carve a niche for himself with the Lakers as an energetic defender with spot-up shooting skills. He said he has underrated pick-and-roll skills and hopes to be someone that brings energy off the bench.

With the 60th and final pick in the draft, the Lakers took Robert Sacre, a center from Gonzaga. He is 7-foot and 260 pounds and could make a defensive contribution also.

Sacre was the 2012 West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 1.4 blocks, 6.3 rebounds and 11.6 points -- with enough shooting touch to make 82.3 percent of his free throws. As a junior, his averages were 1.9 blocks, 6.3 rebounds and 12.5 points.

US approves first obesity drug in 13 years

US regulators on Wednesday approved the first drug to treat obesity in 13 years, a drug called lorcaserin, marketed as Belviq and made by Arena Pharmaceuticals.

The drug works to control the appetite through receptors in the brain and was approved as additional therapy for certain overweight and obese patients, combined with diet and exercise.

Trials showed the drug helped people lose an average of three to 3.7 percent of their body weight after a year when compared to a placebo, the US Food and Drug Administration said.

It is approved for use in obese adults with a body mass index of 30 or greater, or overweight adults with a BMI of 27 or greater who have at least one other condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.

Arena's stock opened the day at $9 per share and jumped as high as 47 percent on news of the US approval. The company said it is also seeking approval on the European market, but has no timeline yet for a decision.

Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, described obesity as "a major public health concern," and said the new drug offers a treatment option when used "responsibly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle."

However, the FDA warned that Belviq is not for women who are pregnant or nursing, and called for further long-term postmarketing studies on the drug's potential risks.

The label will also recommend that Belviq be discontinued in patients who fail to lose five percent of their body weight after 12 weeks of treatment.

"These patients are unlikely to achieve clinically meaningful weight loss with continued treatment," said the FDA statement.

Belviq activates the serotonin 2C receptor in the brain, and may cause serious side effects if taken in combination with certain medications for depression and migraine that increase serotonin levels or activate serotonin receptors.

"Belviq may also cause disturbances in attention or memory," said the FDA.

Common side-effects in patients without diabetes include headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, and constipation.

In diabetic patients, side effects may include low blood sugar, headache, back pain, cough, and fatigue.

Lorcaserin was rejected in 2010 by the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee, which advises the FDA, over concerns that it formed breast tumors in rats.

But those effects did not appear in trials on overweight and obese humans.

An independent advisory committee to the FDA recommended the drug be approved in May after three randomized, placebo-controlled trials of nearly 8,000 patients spanning one to two years.

"All participants received lifestyle modification that consisted of a reduced calorie diet and exercise counseling," the FDA said.

"Compared with placebo, treatment with Belviq for up to one year was associated with average weight loss ranging from three percent to 3.7 percent."

Some patients with type 2 diabetes experienced higher levels of weight loss, with 38 percent of these patients achieving at least five percent loss of their body weight compared to 16 percent who did the same on a placebo.

The pills will be manufactured at Arena's facility in Zofingen, Switzerland, and will be distributed in the US by Eisai Pharmaceuticals.

Arena is headquartered in San Diego, California.

According to Michael Aziz, internist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, the biggest apparent drawback to the drug is the tiny amount of weight loss that patients experience while taking it.

"The only problem with this drug is the weight loss is so, so very low," Aziz told AFP, remarking that a 200 pound (91 kilogram) person might lose just six pounds (2.7 kg) in a year, based on the study data.

"That is so insignificant," he said. "I think people should also implement lifestyle changes because the fact is, people can lose one pound a week and that is perfectly healthy."

The last anti-obesity drug approved in the United States was Xenical (Orlistat) by Roche in 1999.

Sold over the counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline, it works by preventing the body from absorbing fat, though its tendency to cause gastrointestinal side effects such as oily, loose stools have curbed its popularity among patients.

For the entire month of October Marvel will be launching special comic book covers and educational material on ways to fight and reduce the risk of the disease. Tyler Perry Is Writing a Sci-Fi Screenplay

Prometheus will probably best be remembered as one of the most disappointing films of the past several years.? I still can?t conjure up the vitriol I?ve seen directed at the movie, but I can understand the disdain of those who were excited by the prospect of Ridley Scott doing a big, bad-ass sci-fi film, and then having the plot crumble to dust if you gave it so much as a sideways glance.? Tyler Perry was not a fan of Scott?s latest film, but he?s still a major fan of sci-fi, and now he?s going to try his hand at the genre.

Speaking to Blackfilm.com, Perry noted his passion for the sci-fi genre:

TYLER PERRY: I love Sci Fi, I love the Alien movies and the Alien franchise. I was very disappointed with Prometheus, but I love that whole franchise. Those are my favorite movies. I?m actually working on a sci-fi movie right now.

Can you tell us a little bit about that?

PERRY: No, but I?m writing a sci-fi movie that I?m really excited about.

You may recall that Perry had a brief cameo in J.J. Abrams? Star Trek, so it?s not too surprising that he?s re-iterated his love of sci-fi. ?I?m not exactly sure what kind of science fiction Perry is going for, but if you go by Star Trek and Alien, it looks like he prefers the extraterrestrial variety.? Then again, maybe he?s just working on Madea Goes to Outer Space or something.

one of my favorite qualities in music has always been the songwriting aspect. the way words may be vague, yet still direct and so powerful that it can touch you without even the slightest movement. back when i was 15, my friends and i would take the best road trips to nowhere, taking turns driving just following long roads with no particular direction in mind, wanting to get lost and somehow find our silent ways by listening loudly to music. along with our favorites of joseph arthur, jeff buckley, and nick drake, one band we always agreed on was sunny day real estate. the first time i heard jeremy enigk?s lyrics, it was obvious that they were meant to be heard like poetry, by pushing emotions and opening up your mind to a place where feeling actually is alive. through exploding guitars and traveling bass lines, i was always left in such amazement of their ability to lay emotional vocals on top of beautiful screams, and how it all could make such perfect sense.

it?s been over 15 years since i first heard the magic of sunny day real estate but today as i listened to their album ?diary? all over again, it brought me right back to the way i always understood their music. the way the words, harmonies, and music intensely drives straight to your heart without stopping is still just the same.

that?s what i remember, and that?s what i will always love.

From cuisine to circuses, summer camps target bored kids

HIGHGATE, Vermont (Reuters) - Ten-year-old Max Oreck had been planning to spend much of his summer vacation playing computer games and watching television.

Then his mom told the Asheville, North Carolina fifth-grader he was going to summer camp.

Now Max is learning to wield a melon-baller, carve an orange into a basket-shaped dessert garnish and make flowers out of frosting at the Kids Culinary Camp of Vermont, one of dozens of summer camps that offer alternatives to traditional fare.

"I came for two reasons: I like to cook a lot, and my mom made me," says Oreck, dressed in a chef's hat and smock during a break from preparing grilled bacon and cheese sandwiches in the camp's commercial kitchen.

From high-wire walking to plankton propagation to posture lessons, summer camps are offering an increasingly diverse range of activities compared to the traditional canoe trips, swim lessons and marshmallow-roasting.

The popularity of alternatives is helping fuel growth among the estimated 12,000 summer camps in the United States.

Despite the stagnant economy, revenues at day camps grew by 23 percent between 2008 and last year and by 7 percent at sleep-away camps, according to the American Camp Association, which says the 2,400 organized camps it accredits have combined annual revenues of $2.8 billion.

"We see more specialty camps cropping up every year because there seems to be more of a demand for it," Peg Smith, chief executive of the American Camp Association, said in an email.

That includes demand for activities like pie-throwing lessons, which is how 10-year-old Elsie Harrison, an aspiring clown, concluded her recent stay at a day camp run by Vermont-based Circus Smirkus. Other activities included trapeze, juggling and spinning plates.

Her mother, Laurie Harrison, of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, said the five-hour drive each way for the one-day camp was worth it, despite having to "jump through hoops" to gain admission. Registration for the camp closed within hours after opening last November.

FUTURE OCCUPATIONS?

Some camps may help kids figure out what they want to do when they grow up, something their parents often didn't address until after high school.

Ocean chemistry, plankton biology and tidal studies are among the activities offered at Whale Camp on Grand Manaan Island, just across the Canadian border from Maine. For $1,395 campers get a week of activities like puffin photography, sea-kayaking and whale-watching in the Bay of Fundy.

"It's the closest kids can get to actually being a marine scientist before college," says Dennis Bowen, president of the camp. "Once they get immersed in this it really helps them become committed to preservation and conservation."

Meanwhile, kids as young as 7 or 8 years old who are interested in money, business and economics may attend one-week financial literacy day camps offered by the Young Americans Center for Financial Education in suburban Denver.

Activities include lessons on foreign currencies, banking and budgeting, and those 12 and older can also apply for a VISA credit card with a $100 limit issued by the center's bank.

"These are kids who really like to take ownership of their finances," says Katie Payer, a spokeswoman for the camp. "They have an entrepreneurial spirit."

Aspiring fashion designers in the San Francisco Bay area can attend a fashion day camp offered by the sewnow! studio, where activities include textile design, precision pattern cutting and an end-of-camp fashion show.

Tight budgets, family vacations and a desire to give children different, specialized experiences are driving a trend towards more varied offerings, says the ACA's Smith.

"Camps are responding to what they see as demand from families for more kinds of options and shorter sessions," she said.

TRADITIONAL VARIATIONS

Even more traditional cabins-and-campfires camps are broadening their offerings. Camp Lohikan in Pennsylvania offers a week-long Spy Camp for sleep-away campers, with a roster of activities including evasive driving lessons on all-terrain vehicles, surveillance techniques and code-breaking.

There seems to be a specialty camp for every niche, no matter how rough or refined. Outdoor Texas Camp offer kids as young as 9 years old hunting camps that typically last a week, with lessons on antler scoring, trailing wounded deer and duck and goose calling.

Alternatively the Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette in South Carolina offers five-day "Civil Savvy" camps that include tea parties, thank you note etiquette and ballroom dancing for $1,295. The camp has two girls for every boy.

"We do dress, we do skin care, we do nail care - even for boys," says Cindy Grosso, the founder of the program. "Then every day we have a dining lesson."

The range of options has helped happy campers like Michael Watson, 12, from Dallas get a head start on his journey toward becoming a Renaissance Man. He has attended a traditional archery and swimming camp affiliated with a church in Texas, but prefers his days in the kitchen at Kids Culinary Camp.

"I love being outdoors and all," said Watson, who just finished sixth grade and enjoys making fettuccini by hand. "But this is what I want to do."

“It’s usually men buying rope, but women, they’ve been coming in the last few months,” the manager told the newspaper. “I’ve actually read the book. So when the women began buying rope, it was kind of like, ‘Hmmm, that does seem unusual.’”

Row House 14: Home Brew

No secret here that we tend to be beer snobs. Well, actually, we tend to be food, coffee, music, chocolate, and beer snobs. We just have such a hard time drinking beer that tastes like watered down something or other that's not even beer. Aside from the occasional Natty Boh (which is a Baltimore staple, so it's a fair excuse), you'll find us going for the more potent, flavorful, and artfully crafted varieties.

This past Christmas, Andrew's parents gave us a home brew kit. We had tried an English Bitter beer that they had given us a kit for and it turned out fairly well. However, it was a beer that you'd rather drink with food rather than have as a refreshing beverage on a hot Baltimore summer day. As our supply of the first beer dwindled, we decided to brew a second batch-- this time my favorite, an IPA. The process is a long one with a lot of waiting after actually brewing the beer, so at this point we're waiting on the final carbonation process that occurs after the beer has been bottled.

The process starts with a giant pot of very hot water, some grains in a bag, and finally the addition of malt and hops.

It ferments for almost a week after some yeast has been added, and looks something like this when it is ready to be bottled.
Super tasty looking, right? ;)

The next step is to add a priming sugar that starts the carbonation process and then siphon the beer into a new bucket in order to filter out all of that sludge. Finally, it is bottling time!

We've been thinking of a few names for this particular batch and then I'll be designing labels. We'll be waiting about one more week until the beer is ready to drink, so I'll try to update you all then.
