How I Got Ripped At 500 Startups

dick talensLittle sleep, lots of stress, free food at all hours, and Paul Singh constantly try to booze you under the table. Sounds like the old college days when you tried to rush for Sigma Chi, doesn?t it? But nope. That describes life at 500 Startups. For a former fat kid like me, it?s an environment where I can accidentally gain 15 lbs in the blink of an eye. ?Put a pizza or a tray of doughnuts in front of me and I will devour the goodies without a second thought. ?Unfortunately (or fortunately), being the co-founder of a fitness startup does not afford me this pleasure.

North Korea Missile Launch: FAIL!

North Korea's much-heralded missile launch was a failure yesterday, but the White House still condemned what it felt was a provocative act by the rogue state.

North Korea said it wanted to launch a rocket to put a weather satellite into orbit, but it is widely viewed as a military operation and a dangerous one at that.

The country hasn't been shy about posturing toward the U.S., and many saw the launch - before its failure anyway - as a veiled threat against Washington.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said North Korea's rocket launch was a provocative act that left the nation isolated and in violation of international law:

"Despite the failure of its attempted missile launch, the action threatens security, violates international law and contravenes its own recent commitments."

"While this action is not surprising given North Korea's pattern of aggressive behavior, any missile activity is of concern to the international community."

"The United States remains vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations, and is fully committed to the security (of) our allies in the region."

Analysts believe the launch was designed to enhance its capacity to design a ballistic missile armed with a nuclear warhead capable of hitting the U.S.

The White House alluded to North Korea's chronic food shortages but did not say if it would follow through on a tentative deal to provide food aid.

North Korea had actually trumpeted the launch and tried to draw attention to it as a show of strength, its first such display since Kim Jong Il died.

Better luck next time. Or not.

Return Of 'Girls' Power: HBO Series Gets It Right

Above The Buzz examines Lena Dunham's dramedy about four women living in NYC.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lena Dunham in "Girls"
Photo: HBO

Blah, blah, blah. Yes, "Girls" is a lot like "Sex and the City" in the fact that both shows are about women — four, to be exact — living, loving and working in New York City. And that's about it.

Maybe "Girls" is the best "SATC" prequel that creator Michael Patrick King never pitched: It's dark with little spots of comic relief, as these women try to figure out how to get it right. And they rarely do. They are stuck in jobs that seem to have no future and relationships that make them awful about themselves. Where "Sex" was all about how fabulous NYC is, "Girls" is all about how hard (and expensive) it can be to try and make a dream happen in a town where everyone has a dream.

Perhaps the big difference is "Girls" is created by a young woman in the throes of her own post-adolescence angst. Lena Dunham, 25, the show's creator, writer, director and star, truly understands what it feels like to be stuck in your mid-twenties struggling with the pains of having to grow up. In fact, her vision of this stage of life seems to be so spot-on that it got her an assist from the show's producer, Judd Apatow. (She previously examined those similar themes in her feature film, "Tiny Furniture.")

Not to discredit "Sex." It did an amazing job capturing life in NYC as an aspiration. You too can move to NYC, date rich, powerful dudes, afford fancy cocktails at all the hottest hot spots and glide along Fifth Avenue in Manolo Blahniks.

But first you must be one of the "Girls," who also include Allison Williams (news anchor Brian Williams' daughter) playing Type-A gallery assistant Marnie; Jemima Kirke, a flighty, free spirited Brit Jessa; and Zosia Mamet, the "SATC"-loving college student Shoshanna. Dunham plays Hannah, a writer who talks a lot about her memoir without having actually done very much to get it off the ground, relying on her parents for money.

The show, which premieres Sunday on the former home of "Sex," HBO, is about trying to have it all, but not knowing how to get it. These "Girls" are from a generation of women who have been told they can do an-y-thing. But, the problem is, as most jumped straight into their careers right out of college, they never really had the time to nail down what it is they want.

This confusion leaks into their personal lives, where they battle depression and self-esteem issues. They date men they don't care much about or who don't care much about them. It's an interesting breakdown of the current state of girl power: Can these girls really do an-y-thing?

Well, Dunham and her pals are certainly trying to figure that out, one episode at a time.

Pygmalion's Geas: A little bit of creative writing

I haven't been writing much, lately, or at least it hasn't seemed like I have been (I have 2 or 3 unpublished posts because I haven't gone over them) I had a recent opportunity to walk a wolf. ?I frequently volunteer at a local animal shelter because it offers (almost) all the benefits of ownership without the responsibilities. I figured I'd write about it a bit. ?I got to walk a wolf, and he may have changed my life, regardless of his ability to appreciate this fact. ?So, here goes:
The wolf was incredible; his owners moved to the city and couldn?t keep him anymore because of local laws, but what an amazing animal.? I?ve never walked an animal so? strong.? I walk a lot of dogs.? Many of them are large, Rottweilers and German Shepherds, but you can gauge their strength by looking at their size.? I can stop them, if I have to.? This guy was about their size, a little bigger, but if he got it in his head to chase a squirrel, I would have been helplessly bouncing along the ground behind him until he was finished.? You know those stories you here about dogs breaking steel chains at scrap yards?? This is the first canine I can imagine actually doing that.? Frightfully strong. Speaking of fright, I was kind of nervous walking this guy.? He was docile, but there?s no doubt in my mind that if he wanted to, he could have ripped me to shreds.? I wasn?t worried about it, but there?s that knowledge; most dogs, I could bludgeon into submission if it ever got dangerous (and I use a choke-chain when I?m walking the bigger ones, so I have some leverage), but I only walked this one because they assured me he was friendly.?? Honestly, he seemed very? amicable? but not friendly. When you walk a dog, especially at a shelter, the dog wants to get to know you.? He?ll smell you, or go for some kind of approval.? They don?t usually just take off.? Even the most bad-ass dogs acknowledge the human holding the leash in some way.? In that sense, he was almost like a cat!? The animal shelter worker insisted on putting the leash on himself, but once he handed it to me there was no trade-off to the wolf; just going.? I?m sure he smelled me, but he didn?t dwell on it.? I felt like he just shrugged and thought, ?Well, I?m out of the cage now, tied to some meat sack.?? I walked him about 2 miles, and it was just an incredible half-hour for me. The wolf is one of our principal competitors, millennia before we ever developed much technology, the wolf hunted what we hunted, lived where we lived, and scared the bejeesus out of our ancestors.? I can see why.? This creature, tame as he was, carried with him the grace and lethality of a predator that hasn?t been made stupid by ages of soft living.? This creature?s golden eyes shone with intelligence, echoes of an ancient time when his ancestors made easy pickings of our livestock and outsmarted our best hunters.? His body, though old, carried itself with the lethal grace which brought to life, in me, the countless stories our people tell of the big bad wolf.? He walked beside me, but alone, almost as though he sought his pack. In my awe, I also felt a sinking realization. My entire life, I?ve loved wolves, their majesty.? I?ve felt that they were my spirit-animals, in a way, creatures which encapsulate my essence, in some way; alone, dangerous.? Self-sufficient.? Powerful. I am no wolf.? Those who call themselves wolves in sheep?s clothing are children, playing with power they cannot understand.? Don?t deserve to understand.? They are fools, fancying themselves as something other than cursed to dwell within their own mediocrity.? I was one of them, I see now.? I can think of one man I know who deserves to wear the wolf?s mantle, and even that connection is tenuous.? I may walk alone, but I will never carry myself with the deadly, ruthless efficiency of the wolf.? The indifference to all that is not danger or prey.? It is a terrifying thing, to hold such mystery, such mastery, on a leash, and be cursed only to gaze in awe.? Awe and envy, as this creature was born knowing itself, adept and confident, while I am wracked by insecurity and ineptitude.? Such is the curse of introspection, I suppose. Anyway, to sum up, wolves are neat.(!).

Dieters Share Success Strategies

TUESDAY, April 10 (HealthDay News) -- Many obese Americans who try to lose weight are successful, at least short-term, using traditional methods, according to a new study.

Researchers who evaluated the strategies of more than 1,500 successful obese dieters found that eating less fat, exercising more, taking prescription diet pills and joining a commercial weight-loss program led dieters to lose from 5 percent to 10 percent or more of their body weight.

Just as important as picking a strategy for losing weight is a dieter's commitment to the approach, whatever it is, said lead investigator Dr. Jacinda Nicklas, a clinical research fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"Any of these strategies takes a certain degree of investment -- cutting back on calories, exercising on a regular basis, going to the doctor to get a prescription weight-loss drug, joining a program," she said.

More than a third of Americans are obese. While many obese people may think attempting to lose weight is futile, Nicklas said her study suggests that is not true. And for an obese person, weight loss of 5 to 10 percent can produce health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, she said.

The study, published online April 10 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, looked at a nationally representative sample from the 2001 to 2006 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This ongoing survey collects information about health, health behavior and other data.

The survey takers computed the participants' body mass index (BMI), based on their reported height and weight. BMI is a measurement of size used to calculate weight categories, from underweight to obese. The team focused on the data from those with a BMI of 30 or above, considered obese.

Respondents were asked if they had tried to lose weight and, if so, how they tried to do so.

Of more than 4,000 obese respondents, more than 2,500 said they had tried to lose weight in the last year. Of these, about 1,000 (40 percent) said they had lost 5 percent or more of their body weight. More than 500 (20 percent) said they had lost 10 percent or more.

"For the 5 percent weight loss, people said they used one or more of these strategies -- eating less fat, exercising more and using prescription weight-loss drugs," Nicklas said. "For the 10 percent loss, it was any one or more of those and also joining a commercial weight-loss program."

Other methods, such as liquid diets, nonprescription diet pills or fad diets, were unsuccessful, the researchers said.

"Something advertised over the Internet that seems quick and easy may seem to be an easier way to lose weight but we don't have any evidence that those methods work," Nicklas said.

The study has limitations, however, she said. Height and weight were self-reported, and there is no follow-up data on whether the dieters kept off the pounds.

The results do offer some hope, said Dr. Jennifer Marks, a professor of medicine at the University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute, who is familiar with the study.

The message is, "Weight can come off," she said.

Of those surveyed who were obese and trying to lose weight, about 70 percent were white, so the findings may not apply as much to other ethnicities, she said.

For her patients trying to lose weight, Marks said she advises them to consider the possible strategies and to the one or two that seem "least onerous to you."

With her own patients, Nicklas has noticed yet another strategy used by some successful dieters who want to maintain the loss. They take on a new ''persona." For instance, some become triathletes who are eager to maintain that new image.

These people seem to maintain the loss better, she has observed.

HBT: Reds give Phillips 6 years, $72.5 million

Jim Bowden reported?earlier this afternoon that?the Reds and Brandon Phillips had a six-year, $72.5 million contract extension in place. ?Now it appears to be done, says Ken Rosenthal.

That?s just shy of Ian Kinsler money, so it?s probably about right for the market, even if it seems kind of nuts to go that long with a second baseman. They don?t age all that well. Carlos Baerga and Chase Utley told me so.

But what a world we live in: the Cincinnati Reds, inhabitants of one of baseball?s smallest television markets, have now committed over $300 million to two players in the past couple of weeks.
