Can the auto bailout save Obama in Ohio?

A sign outside United Auto Workers Local 1714 in Lordstown (Liz Goodwin/Yahoo!)

LORDSTOWN, Ohio?In March 2009, Dave Green, president of United Auto Workers' Local 1714, felt a creeping panic. Men holding clipboards and taking notes walked around the Lordstown General Motors plant where his members worked, and from outside came the constant hum of inventory-taking helicopters. Rumors flew that the GM plant, which employed thousands of workers, was going to be sold off or liquidated, another casualty of the recession.

"We knew the money was running out," Green, a Barack Obama supporter, said. "We didn't know what was going to happen."

Within the next two months, the Obama administration bailed out GM as well as Chrysler, aided by billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded loans. In exchange, the companies declared bankruptcy and reorganized. While the federal government is expected to lose about $19 billion of the $80 billion it handed to industry?an industry smaller than it was before the recession hit?it's no longer at death's door.

(The unofficial slogan at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte last month: "Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive.")

Even better for locals: In August, GM announced it would invest an extra $200 million in the Lordstown plant so that its 4,500 workers could continue to build the popular Chevy Cruze, an unexpected best-seller, in three shifts each day.

It makes sense, then, that union leaders in Lordstown are out in force to get the president re-elected, and that Obama and his campaign continually tout the president as a savior of Ohio's auto industry and, by extension, its economy. But it remains to be seen whether Ohioans are buying what the campaign's selling.

In this hotly contested state, where residents almost always pick the next president, Obama is contending with a shrinking union rank and file not always in lockstep with the union party line. And while independent analysts say the car industry would have failed without the bailout, some voters in Ohio, where one in eight jobs is related to the auto industry, aren't convinced.

Romney is fast gaining ground in the state?last week he drew large, enthusiastic crowds when campaigning?and Obama has seen his lead narrow to 2 percentage points in an?average of seven polls taken after his lackluster first debate performance.

Perhaps even more problematic for the president's bailout pitch is that unions are a declining force in Ohio politics. Union households make up 15 percent of the electorate, down from about 22 percent 20 years ago, according to University of Cincinnati political science professor Al Tuchfarber. They still, however, wield power. Last November, Ohio resoundingly recalled a bill supported by Republican Gov. John Kasich that stripped public unions' collective bargaining rights.

[Political junkie? Sign up for the Yahoo! News Daily Ticket newsletter today]

When campaigning in Ohio last week, Romney spoke about the economy and argued that Obama hasn't created enough jobs, especially in the manufacturing sector. But two words that did not cross his lips? "Auto bailout."

The GOP challenger and his surrogates generally steer clear of the topic when in Ohio, and for good reason: In 2008, Romney wrote an op-ed in The New York Times arguing that car companies would collapse if taxpayer money helped fund a bailout, and that GM and Chrysler could restructure themselves after going through a privately financed bankruptcy. The Obama campaign has continually flung the op-ed, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," in the campaign's face, arguing that Romney's plan would have left Ohio in the cold.

Romney didn't visit Lordstown on his five-day Ohio swing last week, but New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a top Romney supporter, stopped by to attend a small rally on Tuesday. The town of 4,000, which GM has labeled "Cruze Country," is heavily Democratic, and attendees at the Christie rally joked about being outnumbered in the area. But two neighboring counties, which also benefit economically from the plant and are home to some plant workers, are expected to vote for Romney.

Christie didn't mention the auto plant in his brief address.

Both Local 1714's Green and Glenn Johnson, the president of another UAW local in Lordstown also supporting Obama, said it made no sense for Christie to speak there without mentioning the town's economic engine. "It was a crossroads, literally a crossroads," Johnson said of the town before the plant.

But Christie had his loyalists. Jim Kane, a 63-year-old former auto worker forced into early retirement in 2009, stood close to the stage, eager to hear the governor speak. Kane, a Republican, is among a group of about 20,000 retired workers at Delphi, a parts supplier once owned by GM, whose pensions were cut by 30 percent or more by the government during the bailout. (In bankruptcy negotiations, Delphi relinquished its pension obligations to the government, which then cut the amount it would pay by 30 to 70 percent.)

GM agreed to make up the difference in the pensions of Delphi workers who were members of the UAW union, while salaried workers like Kane, who for the most part weren't allowed to join the hourly-wage worker union, were left with slashed pensions and health insurance. The uneven treatment prompted criticisms of union favoritism.

A veteran with diabetes, Kane was able to get insurance through Veterans Affairs when GM cut his health-care coverage, but his wife, who has rheumatoid arthritis, and his autistic son are still uninsured.

"We're living so close to the edge right now," Kane said. "I agree with Romney, I believe that places like GM would have taken care of themselves under bankruptcy. GM would have made it through."

(Lordstown's Republican mayor, Arlo Hill, also told Yahoo News he thinks the plant would have survived without the bailout.)

Christie was introduced by UAW member Mark Bedenik, who traveled to Lordstown from Cleveland, where he works at parts supplier Alcoa Cleveland Works. Bedenik wore a bright-yellow UAW shirt altered to read Romney-Ryan. After the event, he clutched his laminated introduction speech as two other UAW workers thanked Bedenik for speaking.

Bedenik, like many other union members, has been canvassing for his candidate. He says he's seeing past and present union members who are newly minted Republicans, and who don't believe the bailout saved the auto industry or jobs in general. "I've gone door to door," he said. "You will see their vote."

Green said he feels most active and retired union members will vote for Obama and that Bedenik is the exception. Green, along with other supporters, is also knocking on doors and making calls, reminding Ohioans that they or someone they know might be out of a job if not for Obama. Supporters credit Ohio's lower-than-average unemployment rate (7.2 percent in August compared to 8.1 percent nationally) to Obama's policies, especially the bailout.

"They feel like they owe this government something and this president something because he was taking a lot of shots for supporting us," Green said of his local's approximately 5,000 members.

About a mile away from the Lordstown park where Christie spoke, volunteers in a wood-paneled conference room in the Local 1714 union hall take shifts calling the union's 3,500 retired and 1,500 active members to ask them to support Obama. Last week union member Kelvin Harlemon worked the phone. He said he had talked to a few members who supported Obama in 2008 but now leaned toward Romney.

"Good morning! This is Kelvin Harlemon over here at 1714," he boomed into the phone. "We're just calling out to our union brothers and sisters. ... Are you intending to vote this year in our presidential election?" Harlemon stared blankly ahead for nearly a minute before saying, "He hung up." He laughed. "What a job."

Nine of the 16 people who answered the phone over a 20-minute period told Harlemon they planned to vote for Obama. Six people hung up on him. One person yelled into the phone, "Yeah I'm going to vote, but I don't like either one of them," and then hung up.

Earlier in the morning, a retired union member told Harlemon that he was an Obama supporter but thought he'd vote for Romney. "Now [Obama's] talking about Big Bird," the man told Harlemon. "I don't want to hear about Big Bird. I'm voting for Mitt." Harlemon reminded the man that Obama had supported labor in the past, and that Romney was against the bailout. The man said he would take this into consideration.

Green (who does an uncanny Bill Clinton impression) said he tells union members they don't have to love Obama to vote for him.

"I love Bill, wish he could run," Green said of the former president. "But you don't have to love Obama, you know. I mean he's not the magic god. ... He's just a guy. But he at least believes in labor. So if you work in labor you ought to slap yourself in the head if you think the other guy will do you better."

3 Simple Ways to Cook Lentils - Good Food Life

3Lentils

This post written by guest blogger?Cheryl Rajkumar

Lentils are nice little legumes packed with high amounts of protein, iron, folates, fiber and minerals and a healthy ingredient versatile enough to include in your everyday cooking. Lentils are low in fat, contain no cholesterol and are naturally gluten-free. Legumes are a big part of Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines and can replace meat in a vegetarian diet due to their high protein content. Lentils can be prepared in a variety of ways and depending on the time available and the type of lentil, you can choose one of the following methods. While most lentils do not need pre-soaking, it is a good idea to pick through the lentils to remove debris and rinse well before cooking.

Stove top

This is the commonly used cooking method for red lentil. These lose shape easily and turn golden yellow once cooked. Use one cup of water or broth to cook 1 cup of lentils. They reach the desired texture in 10-15 minutes. Cooked lentil can be used to thicken soup, added to salads or can be used in one pot meals like pilafs and kedgeree.

Slow cooker

A crock pot or slow cooker is a perfect way to cook white lentil. Combine meat, vegetables, spices and a teaspoon of curry seasoning with white lentils and cook on high setting for up to 3 hours or low setting for up to 8 hours. The exotic scents of curry spices will enliven the flavors of this hearty stew.

Pressure cooker

This is the quickest and the most energy-efficient method to cook yellow lentils, commonly used in Indian homes. It takes about 5-7 minutes to cook them to a mush and is the best method to cook lentils, as it retains all the nutrients unlike the conventional cooking method. Check back tomorrow for a delicious Pearl Onion Daal Curry recipe! Have any great recipes to share? Let us know in the comments below!

Visualized: Space shuttle Endeavour goes on a crosstown journey through LA streets

Image

The space shuttle Endeavour finally bid adieu to its fans in Southern California last weekend, not in the air, but on city streets. The L.A. Times captured this remarkable feat in a time-lapse video, and it's quite a sight to see the orbiter sailing past suburban houses and fast food drive-thrus. Along its 12-mile crosstown trip from LAX to the California Science Center in Exposition Park, the shuttle atop a special transporter had to maneuver past trees, utility poles and of course hundreds of enthralled residents. This came weeks after it made its farewell tour over the California coast perched on a Boeing 747. Take a peek at the Endeavour's final fascinating journey at the source.

LG Optimus G coming to Japan in blue and white on KDDI

LG Optimus G on KDDI

The LG Optimus G certainly seems to be making the rounds lately, and now Japanese carrier KDDI has announced the availability of the handset on its network. Overall, its the phone we know from previous launches, complete with the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 13MP camera and LTE. The only difference here is the color choices -- white and two-tone blue/black -- in typical Japanese carrier fashion.

The Optimus G will go on sale with KDDI on November 2nd. For those of you in the states, we're working furiously on our reviews of the Sprint and AT&T versions of the Optimus G, and have already put up a couple quick hits on the device.

A Handy Flowchart for Selecting Your 2012 CMJ Panels, Day 1 ...

Today marks the start of the CMJ Music Marathon, the annual festival during which zillions of allegedly up-and-coming bands take over Williamsburg and lower Manhattan for the better part of a week to schmooze with various music industry forces and perform at their heavily branded sponsored showcases. This makes it an especially great week for concerts in New York, as you are probably already aware. But those who were lucky enough to score one of the pricey all-access passes also get another lesser-known benefit: admission to an excellent slate of daytime programming, mostly panel discussions and presentations hosted at NYU's Kimmel Student Center, roughly two dozen every day. Since these often go unheralded and thus might be incidental to your existing CMJ plans, we've compiled a handy tool to help you assemble a schedule. See you there.

Your Probate Estate: 3 Types of Property | Byrd : Garrett, PLLC Blog

Oct 15, 2012 ?/? By: Geoffrey H. Garrett, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Probate, Wills and Trusts

When you die your property gets divided into two general categories: your probate estate and your non-probate estate. Your probate estate is all the property that will have to go before the probate court before it can be transferred to new owners. Not all of your property has to do this, and designing an estate plan which tries to keep your probate estate as small as possible is a common estate planning strategy. Let?s take a look at the three main types of property which fall into the probate estate category.

Individual Property

Anything you own as an individual, meaning you don?t own it as a joint owner with someone else, typically falls under the category of probate property. A home that you own in your name, or a personal vehicle or boat, is commonly covered under probate.

Non-Beneficiary Accounts

If you have bank accounts, retirement accounts, or insurance policies which allow you to name a beneficiary, this property does not have to go through probate. Other accounts in which you do not name a beneficiary, such as individual stocks you might own or bank accounts without beneficiary designations, are a part of your probate estate.

Non-Trust Property

Creating a living trust is a common estate planning tool, but may not be able to keep all of your property out of probate court. Anything the trust owns can bypass probate, but if you fail to transfer some of your property to the trust or you make an error during the trust funding process, the property will have to go through probate.

The Peruvian Congress Defense Commission passed a bill that extends the capacity of the Armed Forces to counter drug trafficking in Peru, informed the official news agency Andina, on September 10.

This approved bill aims to modify legislation to allow military intervention in the fight against drug trafficking, a crime that is addressed mostly by police forces.

One of the amendments would authorize the involvement of military forces in emergency areas, such as the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro River Valley (VRAEM), so that they can intercept people and land vehicles that roam the coca crop areas.

The bill will be discussed in the following days at a congressional plenary session.

Recently, the Peruvian government has strengthened the Military and police presence in the VRAEM area, where drug trafficking operates along with remnants of Shining Path guerillas, according to official sources.

On September 10, the Peruvian Ministry of Defense ordered an increase in the security of the area because of an attack perpetrated by the Shining Path during the weekend.

On September 6, members of the Peruvian insurgent group set fire to three helicopters that provided services to the country?s national gas transportation company Transportadora de Gas del Per?, which performs work in the gas fields of Camisea, located within Cusco department.

Fifty years later, Cuba still haunted by missile crisis

HAVANA (Reuters) - Fifty years ago, in October 1962, Estela Rivas Vasquez stood watch in a newly dug bunker outside Havana's grandiose Hotel Nacional, using binoculars to scan the Straits of Florida for signs of an American invasion.

She did not fully know why Cuban leader Fidel Castro had put the country on a war footing, but as a civilian militia member she was certain of one thing - at the tender age of 18 she was prepared to die for her country.

"I'll tell you the truth - I did not feel fear ... I had to defend the country and I didn't care about dying," said Rivas, a petite woman still as feisty as she was then.

U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev eventually negotiated an end to what became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, which began on October 16, 1962 when Kennedy was told the Soviet Union had placed nuclear missiles on Cuba, barely 90 miles off the Florida coast.

On October 28, after 13 tense days with the world on the verge of nuclear war, Khrushchev agreed to withdraw the missiles in exchange for Kennedy's promise that the United States would never invade the island, with whom U.S. relations had steadily worsened after Castro took power in a 1959 revolution.

Most of the world was relieved that a potential World War III had been avoided, but in Cuba the reaction, led by Castro, was at best ambivalent. Although tempered by time, it remains so today.

BETRAYED

Cubans shared the world's relief 50 years ago, but felt betrayed because Castro had been excluded from the negotiations.

They believed his absence led to a deal that did not include an end to the U.S. trade embargo against the communist-ruled island and the return to Cuba of the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, both still key issues today.

Young people, including Rivas, took to the streets shouting chants against Khrushchev.

"We got really angry when Nikita withdrew the rockets, because they didn't consult with Fidel. We lost the opportunity to get Guantanamo back," Rivas said glumly.

When pressed on how that might have been done, she suggested that with fear of nuclear war hanging over its head and the Soviet Union backing Cuba, the U.S. might have changed its policies.

"If the Americans had said there's a Soviet base in Cuba, we'd be able to say there's an American base, too," she said.

But Kennedy and Khrushchev were less concerned with resolving Cuba's grievances than with ending the crisis as quickly as possible, said James Blight, a history professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada, who recently published "The Armageddon Letters," a book on the missile crisis.

With the fate of the world in the balance, there was no time for the dangerous gamesmanship the Cubans wanted to play.

"Khrushchev was so frightened at this point that the world is going to blow up he couldn't care less what the Cubans say. He would deal with that later," Blight said.

Out in the field, the Soviets had ordered the Cubans not to fire at low-flying U.S. reconnaissance planes buzzing over the island, fearing it could provoke an American response.

Huddled in a trench in the mountains west of Havana, militia member Orlando Iglesias watched in terror day by day as the planes roared by, barely above the treetops.

"Those were terrible moments, I thought I could die and I thought of my children, who were very young," remembered the mild-mannered Iglesias, now 86.

His fellow Cubans wanted to shoot at the planes, but they followed the Soviet orders until October 26, when an increasingly frustrated and desperate Castro, thinking a U.S. invasion was inevitable, ordered the firing ban lifted.

The next day, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over eastern Cuba and Castro wrote a letter to Khrushchev urging him to unleash a nuclear attack on the United States if it invaded Cuba.

"That would be the moment to eliminate such danger forever through an act of clear legitimate defense, however harsh and terrible the solution would be, for there is no other," wrote Castro, who was 35 at the time.

Khrushchev viewed his suggestion as madness.

Blight said it was a reflection of a "streak of martyrdom" running through Cuban history, which he characterized as "don't give in, don't compromise, don't say yes, if you can't get the whole thing, it's better to die in the service of your nation, your people."

Today, some of the Soviet missiles, freshly painted with a red hammer-and-sickle, are displayed in a Havana park as a tourist attraction and Rivas gives tours of the Hotel Nacional, including the bunkers where she kept watch for American ships.

Castro, now 86 and out of power since 2008, would later in life become a campaigner against nuclear weapons.

'SNL' parodies VP debate with help from Usain Bolt

NEW YORK (AP) ? "Saturday Night Live" parodied the vice presidential debate with a little help from the world's fastest man.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt dropped by the NBC sketch show's mock debate after Taran Killam, playing Mitt Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, claimed he won the 100-meter race at the London Olympics. Ryan has been criticized for exaggerating his marathon time.

"SNL" had fun with the vice president candidates following Thursday's contentious debate. While President Barack Obama and Romney's first debate didn't offer as much obvious satire, the show happily skewered Vice President Joe Biden and Ryan.

Jason Sudeikis, as Biden, called himself "Big Daddy Joe" and insisted he was "monkey strong" unlike his younger foe, whom he referred to as "shark eyes." Killam played Ryan with an Eddie Munster-like widow's peak.

Vodafone Germany expects Nokia Lumia 820 and 920 on November 1st

Everyone knows that Nokia's Lumia 820 and 920 are slated to arrive in November. But how soon into the month? Going by Vodafone Germany's assertions, both of the devices will come just as some of us are nursing our Halloween candy hangovers -- that is, November 1st. While neither Nokia nor Microsoft has confirmed the timing independently, it lines up with a brief mention of a similar date at retailer MediaMarkt and would follow just two days after the big Windows Phone 8 event where Nokia is likely to take center stage. Provided Vodafone isn't just being optimistic, it gives us hope that the North American launches of the advanced Lumias won't be far behind.

Playing Where's Waldo with Mental Health Care ... - Disabled World

Editorials Political Editorials

Information provided by National Alliance on Mental Illness - Published: 2012-10-13

Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Representative Paul Ryan pulled no punches in Thursday's vice presidential debate, but "mental health" and "mental illness" were never mentioned.

"Finding concern for mental illness is in the presidential debates is like playing a game of Where's Waldo?" said Michael J. Fitzpatrick, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

"One in four American adults experience a mental health problems in any given year, but in this election year important dimensions and distinctions on issues important to individuals and families affected by mental illness are being overlooked."

During the vice-presidential debate, many exchanges focused on Medicare, but only passing reference was made to Medicaid - a critical life-line for many low-income people living with disabilities.

"NAMI wants to hear President Obama and Governor Romney talk more about Medicaid and mental health specifically when they debate next week," Fitzpatrick said.

"Mental illness does not discriminate. It strikes Democrats, Republicans and independents alike."

NAMI's non-partisan "Mental Health Care Gets My Vote " campaign supports the following priorities:

  • Protect mental health funding.
  • Expand access to mental health coverage.
  • Ensure that effective mental health services are available.
  • Promote integration of mental health, addictions and primary care.
  • Improve the mental health of children, youth and young adults.
  • Meet the mental health needs of service members, veterans and their families.
  • Provide homes and jobs for people living with mental illness
  • Eliminate disparities in mental health care.
  • End inappropriate jailing of people with mental illness.

NAMI also has published two reports:

State Mental Health Cuts: The Continuing Crisis
(www.nami.org/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm?ContentFileID=147763)

Parity for Patriots: The Mental Health Needs of Military Personnel, Veterans and Their Families
(http://www.nami.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Inform_Yourself/About_Public_Policy/Policy_Reports/ParityforPatriots.pdf)

"Every voter needs to study the issues closely. Look past the rhetoric. Weigh dueling numbers carefully. Apply that kind of scrutiny to every federal, state and local candidate," Fitzpatrick said.

About NAMI - NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. It does not endorse candidates.

Personal stories deter drunk driving for teens | Baton Rouge ...

Earlier this month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that there has been a 54 percent decrease in the past 20 years in the number of teens who drive after consuming alcohol. And while this is certainly encouraging news, the fact remains that still more needs to be done to get the message across to teen drivers that drinking and driving is dangerous and costs lives.

Going by the statistics released by the CDC, across the country -- including here in Louisiana -- teens still drank and drove 2.4 million times a month. This, combined with the fact that teens are 17 times more likely to die in a crash where alcohol has played a role, is a deadly combination.

But just what can be done to get this message across to young drivers?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving went about finding the answer. And while the group successfully advocated for graduated licenses and a zero tolerance policy when it came to underage drinking legal limits, it turns out that school assemblies educating kids on the dangers of drinking and driving are still not as powerful as teens talking with their peers and family and hearing personal stories. It's those personal stories that really seem to deter drunk driving.

This is why it's important for there to be conversations about the dangers of drunk driving. Even in cases where it feels awkward or when parents falsely believe they don't have as much influence on their children as other teens do, the truth is that having these conversations can go a long way in a teen's decision to not only not drink and drive, but to also not get in the car with a drunk driver.

Pet Shop Boys ?Leaving (Believe In PSB Remix)?: Idolator Premiere ...

Beautiful Single, Fab Remix

Whether they?re doing high-profile gigs like the closing ceremony of the London Olympics or recording exquisite albums like their latest, Elysium, Pet Shop Boys always manage to keep pop fans satisfied with their attention to detail. Case in point: the slew of demos, b-sides and remixes for new single ?Leaving,? which will be made available in three separate digital bundles on iTunes on Tuesday, October 16 in the US (and on October 15 in the UK).

Today Idolator is premiering the ?Believe In PSB Remix? of ?Leaving,? which pretty much serves as a good old-fashioned extended version of the song ? one where many of the flourishes in the background are more prominent and punched up. Listen below!

Yesterday we spoke with Andrew Dawson, co-producer of Elysium, about recording ?Leaving? with Pet Shop Boys members Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. He noted the following: ?There are a lot of little subtle production elements in ?Leaving,? and some we went back and fourth on quite a few times. Sometimes I think more than the average listener would catch or hear. The great thing about it is we were all very focused on the larger details all the way down to the small ones, so you?ll hear a little more each time you listen.?

See if you can catch some of those details more easily in the ?Believe In PSB Remix? of ?Leaving?:

One quality that stands out the most on ?Leaving? ??and on many of the tracks on Elysium ? is the unmistakeable presence of backing vocalists Oren, Maxine, Luther and Julia Waters, who have worked with everyone from Michael Jackson in his Motown days to Adele. You can hear them prominently in the remix above.

?Chris and Neil knew from the start that they wanted a thick lush BV environment on this album,? Dawson told us. ?Early on in the process I was talking with my management and they had just done some work with the Waters. I ended up reaching out to them and invited them over to see how it would work, and as I recall, ?Leaving? was one of the first songs they recorded on. We were recording within 30 minutes of them arriving to the studio. They were wonderful at harmonizing everything and working out the balance and blend between themselves, because they have been singing together for so long.?

As we noted in our review of Elysium, ?Leaving? is a song about growing older and facing death ? in particular, Tennant penned the lyrics to reflect his thoughts on the recent passing of both of his parents. Still, it?s an upbeat track, and the ?Believe In PSB Remix? really plays up its more uplifting pop elements.

Andrew explained how he and the Boys went about creating that quality: ?The? ?happy sad? tone of the album is most easily set by Neil?s lyrics. A very bittersweet, reflective, yet peaceful look at things. So the challenge is to find something that compliments that direction. Certain instrumentation can subtly and subconsciously steer your emotions to angry, happy, sad, thoughtful ? the whole gamut of sounds. So the challenge is to put the pieces together that work as a whole, not throw everything in the kitchen sink at it. Let it breathe, but still give detail to the music. There?s a lot of clever subtlety in this album.?

Pet Shop Boys have been Grammy-nominated several times, most recently for their 2009 album Yes. Dawson himself has three Grammys thanks to his work on Kanye West?s albums. Still, the producer notes that collaborating with Neil and Chris allowed him to explore new avenues with music.

?Usually in the pop/urban world, an extremely high prevalence is put on the ?beat? ? almost to the point that sometimes the melody, and more so the harmony, are an afterthought. Chris and Neil from the start have top notch chordal and harmonic structure, complimented by really great melodies. The harmony/melody are really important to them, so it was really fun for me ? especially being from a classical background ?to embellish and work with harmony/melody.?

Elysium is out now. Pet Shop Boys? ?Believe In PSB Remix? of ?Leaving? will be made available on iTunes on Tuesday, October 16. Give it a spin above, and let us know your thoughts on the song below, or by hitting us up on Facebook and Twitter!
