A Busy And Head-Scratching 2012 Hurricane Season

This satellite image from Oct. 28 shows Hurricane Sandy in the Atlantic Ocean before making landfall.

Superstorm Sandy is what most people will remember from the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. But Sandy was just one of 10 hurricanes this year ? a hurricane season that was both busy and strange.

Late summer is when the hurricane season usually gets busy. But Greg Jenkins, a professor of atmospheric science at Howard University, says this year was different.

"We saw storms in May and June, and in July and then August, September and October," he says. Jenkins says many of those storms didn't get much attention, though, because of where they went. "Most of the tracks were out over the central Atlantic."

But there were a lot: 19 named storms. Most years have a dozen. And a lot of things about the season were just odd. Jenkins says early on, scientists were expecting a quieter year.

"We were all thinking that an El Nino would develop in the Eastern Pacific," he says. "And typically when we see that, it's not conducive to hurricanes. But the El Nino never developed."

El Nino conditions occur when the Eastern Pacific gets unusually warm. That changes winds flowing to the Atlantic in a way that discourages tropical storms and hurricanes. And without El Nino, two tropical storms actually formed before the season's official start on June 1.

Later, a storm named Nadine meandered around the North Atlantic for weeks, reaching hurricane strength three times and striking the Azores twice. Jenkins says Nadine seemed to ignore conditions that usually kill hurricanes ? things like vertical wind shear. That's when high altitude winds blow at a different speed, or in a different direction, than low altitude winds.

"Nadine was under shear ? the waters were cold," he says. "So there was really no reason for it to hang around forever. But it did."

And then there was Isaac, which seemed destined to strike the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

It didn't. Instead, Isaac turned toward New Orleans, where it looked like it was going to arrive on Aug. 29 ? seven years to the day after Hurricane Katrina.

President Obama even took to the airwaves to alert people along the Gulf Coast: "Now is not the time to tempt fate," he said. "Now is not the time to dismiss official warnings. You need to take this seriously."

But Jenkins says Hurricane Isaac continued to defy expectations. "As it moved off towards the west, it moved towards New Orleans. And then it just stopped ? that was pretty bizarre. We were all thinking it was going inland. It kind of hung out around the coast, dumped a lot of rain" ? more than a foot in some places.

And that brings us to the largest and strangest storm of the year: Hurricane Sandy. Almost everything about Sandy was unusual. It turned left where most storms turned right. It started out as a hurricane and then became an equally powerful winter superstorm. It brought heavy snow to the Appalachians.

Jenkins says even veteran hurricane scientists were amazed. "If you're looking at it from a weather or research point of view ? it's just like, 'Wow. Really?' "

Because Hurricane Sandy was expected to become a winter storm, the National Hurricane Center handed off warning duties to another branch of the National Weather Service before landfall. Officials are still discussing whether that confused the public.

But Jenkins says it was clear that Sandy was going to be a major threat. "The wind field was so large and the winds were powerful. And it began impacting the East Coast days before it actually arrived."

The superstorm became the largest on record ? more than 1,100 miles across. Storms that big can generate huge tidal surges. And just hours before Sandy reached the coast near Atlantic City, James Franklin of the National Hurricane Center broadcast this message:

"The area that we're most concerned about is Raritan Bay, Long Island Sound, where we could see anywhere from 6 to 11 feet of inundation above the ground. That means if you're 6 feet tall, the water could be 5 feet above you," Franklin said.

The storm surge exceeded even that forecast, reaching 13 feet in parts of lower Manhattan. Meteorologists say they don't know why there were so many storms this year. It's not clear, for example, whether global warming was a factor.

But they note that since 1995, 70 percent of hurricane seasons have been busier than normal.

Woman held in NYC subway death

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK?? A woman is in custody in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a speeding subway train, and she "made statements implicating herself," New York City police said Saturday.

Detectives questioned her but aren't releasing the 31-year-old suspect's name until she is formally charged, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said in a brief statement. Among other things, investigators were arranging for witnesses to positively identify the woman in custody as the attacker, police said.

Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident who was born in India and ran a printing shop, died Thursday night when a woman who had been muttering to herself on a train platform in Queens suddenly knocked him on the tracks as a train entered the station.

The woman fled after the attack. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station.

The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.

Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.

It was unclear whether she had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

Updated today at 4:38 PM

The Washington Huskies have officially hired Marques Tuiasosopo to be the team?s new quarterbacks coach.

"Marques is a Husky football legend, and we?re excited to welcome him back home to Washington," said Coach Steve Sarkisian. ?He brings a high level of expertise about the quarterback position which will be of great benefit to our program."

In 46 games for the Huskies from the 1997 through 2000 seasons, Tuiasosopo passed for 5,879 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for 1,495 more yards with 21 more scores. He was the 2000 Pac-10 offensive player of the year.

Tuiasosopo played quarterback for eight seasons in the NFL through 2008 and has spent last year as tight ends coach at UCLA after having served as a grad assistant for the Bruins the previous year.

"I'm very excited to come back home to coach where I played and to help Coach Sarkisian continue to bring the Huskies back to where we belong: at the top of the Pac-12, in the Rose Bowl and competing for championships," Tuiasosopo said. "I'm also happy to be coaching the position I love.

After leaving the Raiders and the NFL following the 2008 season, he was an assistant strength coach for the Huskies during Sarkisian's first two seasons at Washington.

(AP) ? President Evo Morales nationalized the Bolivian electricity distribution subsidiaries of the Spanish energy company Iberdrola in a public ceremony Saturday.

Morales issued a decree allowing the takeover of shares in Empresa de Electricidad de La Paz (Electropaz) and Empresa de Luz y Fuerza de Oruro (Elfeo), which supply energy in this Andean nation.

Soldiers guarded the installations of the electricity distribution companies, marked with signs reading: "Nationalized."

In the ceremony at Bolivia's government palace, Morales also announced the expropriation of an investment management company and a service provider belonging to the Spanish energy giant.

Morales said he had "been forced to take this step" to ensure that electric service rates remain "equitable" in the regions of La Paz and Oruro.

The Spanish government said in a statement that it regretted Bolivia's decision to nationalize companies that included "Spanish, Argentine and American companies among its shareholders."

Spain said it hoped "the process of assessing the value of the nationalized company is done with high standards of objectivity that would establish the just compensation to which shareholders are entitled."

Telephone calls and emails seeking comment from Iberdrola in Spain were not immediately answered.

The decree read by Morales calls for Iberdrola to receive indemnification after an independent firm is hired within 180 days to determine the value of the nationalized shares.

Morales in May also nationalized Transportadora de Electricidad belonging to Spanish company Red Electrica, which controlled 74 percent of energy transmission in Bolivia.

In his first year in office in 2006, the Bolivian president nationalized the oil industry through a renegotiation of contracts with a dozen oil companies, including Repsol, Petrobras, BG and Total.

In 2009 Morales transferred to state control the country's largest telephone operator, which had been controlled by Italy's ETI, and in 2010 he did the same with the four largest power generators, which had belonged to French-owned Suez, Rurelec of Britain and Bolivian shareholders.

$1000 to transfer from public to private? - Adoption.com Forums

Honestly, I have gotten very shady answer on this one from the Adoption Worker Supervisor. IMHO, they (county) were not prepared nor knew what to do for "adoption" only families. So, as I understand it, a small section of families chose to stay as "adoption only" with the county and did not transfer their foster licenses. So, the last few kids I got info on was in September and I think the AWS "forgot" that I was transferred out. Maybe I am paranoid and they just haven't had any more littles available. It is pretty rare. Since I have been trying since May 2011, there have been 5 under 5. But, she also gets reports from other counties and forwards them out, and I havent gotten any of those either. A lot of the smaller counties have a higher percentage of kids going to adoption because they have fewer foster homes and if the foster families adopted all of the kids, they'd have no foster families. [not sure if I explained that right]

So, let me try to rephrase what I believe is the options.

A.) Maintain my FOSTER license and inherent Adoption homestudy with the private agency where the focus will be on FOSTER only, or they will assist with an adoption if either a.) it is the child I am fostering or b.) I find one on a photolisting

B.) After one year, I can close my FOSTER license and transfer my ADOPTION homestudy back to county and wait for just a legally available child. (I don't think they place legal-risk in adoption only homes as that is why I got Chubbs, because I was foster/adopt.)

And, I have to be "foster" in order to take in a sibling. So, it is quite a dilemma for me to be honest as I am only keeping out my foster license until Chubbs is about 3.

London, the Holidays, and the Rolling Stones

I took off from California to see the Rolling Stones' first 50th anniversary concert, the only one with a confirmed appearance by the band's original bassist Bill Wyman, and along the way I discovered London at one of its most dazzling times of the year.

?

The Rolling Stones' kick off show at the mighty O2, a 20,000 seat indoor arena located at the edge of the city, happened to coincide with the start of the holiday season. I assumed that the land of figgy pudding and the Ghost of Christmas Past would be festive from November through the first week of January.

?

But I thought my days around the Stones' concert would involve an excursion to the edgy East End and a couple days at the British Music Experience, the interactive museum within the O2 complex that tracks the roots and cultural history of the major British rock 'n' roll movements.

?

Instead, the frothy excitement of London's holiday spirit all but hijacked my attention and lured me into different neighborhoods and activities. Many of the festivities continue through January 5, which is the twelfth day of Christmas. (Typically, the twelve days of Christmas begin on December 25 or December 26, which is Boxing Day.) Given that Christmas and New Year's land on a Tuesday this year, a four or five day trip to London is actually doable this holiday season. And it is worth the trip.

?

Urban Dazzlers: London has stationed extraordinary light and ornamental displays around town. These giant installations arch over streets, hang over major thoroughfares, and border buildings, railings, walls, windows and just about anything nailed down, it seems. Each of the Twelve Days of Christmas, as described in the traditional folk tune, is illustrated on huge golden plaques bordered by massive illuminated sprigs of holly and suspended over Regent Street. Covent Garden is nearly a blur of illuminated color, especially around the central square. Pedestrians walk amid and through blue arches of light over South Molton. Marylebone, Oxford, Bond and other areas also are aglow with holiday bulbs.

?

My favorite installation, keeping with the major theme of the trip, is on Carnaby Street. The Rolling Stones set up a pop up shop there and overhead are huge disks with photos of Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ron and the band's trademark red lips and tongue logo. The street displays continue through Jan. 5 and they cost the price of a Tube ticket, if that. (Ok, I took a taxi back to the hotel.)

?

Some hotels, like the uniquely elegant Milestone across from Kensington Palace, and the Stafford Hotel are ablaze with light. Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland, with its ice rink, 500 ice sculptures and 100,000 bulbs a blazing, offers a full immersion holiday experience, although some of the activities cost and some are free. And, of course, shops and department stores, most famously Harrods and Harvey Nichols, have fashioned their own sort of spectacle. The latter even throws a couple of New Year Eve parties on its 2nd and 4th floors this year.

?

Holiday Theater: London is one of the foremost theatre destinations in the world. But of the plays and musicals currently occupying stages in the West End, "Constellations", which runs through Jan. 5 at Royal Court Theatre, has an inadvertent end of year spin. The two person play by Nick Payne lacks any hint of holiday trappings. No December/January setting. No heart-warming message. This is a play about string theory and parallel universes of different possible outcomes to human actions. This theme is carried out through an especially clever dramatic device that tells the story of a relationship. Seeing it at this time of year, "Constellations" encourages a reconsideration of what New Year's resolutions can really mean and how our choices -made and not made-- shape our lives.

?

The Three Days of London's New Year: First there's New Year Eve, with the free fireworks display on the South Bank of the River Thames, the hotels' and restaurants' special dinners and a myriad of club parties. Then, on New Year's Day, London hosts a parade with 10,000 performers from multiple countries. Then, comes the inevitable --Detox Day.

?

One of the places to shed the excess is the ESPA at the relatively new Corinthia Hotel, which manages to be classic and chic at the same time. (Some of the Rolling Stones' entourage stayed here during the London shows). The hotel boasts a magnificent location near Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and the River Thames. But its spa, occupying four floors, is hidden in the lower recesses of the building. It serves as a hermetic womb of healing waters and pools, body and facial treatments and a fitness room with personalized instruction and advice. This is a post-holiday haven and one of London's best places to recover from 2012 and reload for the New Year.

?

Letting a concert's location determine a travel itinerary is not typical-- unless you follow jam bands, of course. But participating in London's holiday revelry was an unexpected benefit to attending the Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary show.

?

Let's see if the band takes the show on the road in 2013 and where those may lead.

Prison Planet.com ? Amateur and PROFESSIONAL Investors Lose ...

Lack of Trust ? Caused by Institutional Corruption ? Is Killing the Economy

Washington?s Blog
December 29, 2012

We?ve previously documented that?lack of trust ? caused by institutional corruption ? is killing the economy.

Not only amateurs, but also?professional investors are giving up on America and other economies that have become untrustworthy.

(When you have financial luminaries such as Bill Gross, Nouriel Roubini and Laurence Kotlikoff saying that?America is running a giant Ponzi scheme, it?s hard to get too excited about traditional investing strategies.)

AP once again?confirms this fact (commentary by Tyler Durden of?Zero Hedge):

As?AP discusses in this excellent article, ordinary Americans ? defying decades of investment history ? are selling stocks for a fifth year in a row. It?s the?first time ordinary folks have sold during a sustained bull market since relevant records were first kept during World War II. The answer is both complex and simple but summed up best by a former stock analyst?s comment that in order to buy stocks? You have to trust your government. You have to trust other governments. You have to trust Wall Street, and I don?t trust any of these.? With Fed policy trying to force investors back into stocks (at any cost), a former fund manager notes, presciently that, ?When this policy fails, as it will, baby boomers will pay the cost in their 401(k)s.? Are we the new ?Depression Babies?? We suspect so.

Investors, as you well know, are leaving the equity markets in droves?

Based on AP?s calculations, individuals accounted for 40 percent to 50 percent of money going to U.S. stock ETFs in recent years.

If you assume 50 percent, individual investors have put $194 billion into U.S. stock ETFs since April 2007. But they?ve also pulled out much more from mutual funds ? $580 billion. The difference is?$386 billion, the amount individuals have pulled out of stock funds in all.

If you?include the sale of stocks by individuals from brokerage accounts, which is not included in the fund data, the?outflow could be much higher.

But why are investors not buying the propaganda this time and jumping in with both hands and feet?

?You have to trust your government. You have to trust other governments. You have to trust Wall Street,? says Neitlich, 47. ?And I don?t trust any of these.?

Defying decades of investment history, ordinary Americans are selling stocks for a fifth year in a row. The selling has not let up despite unprecedented measures by the Federal Reserve to persuade people to buy and the come-hither allure of a levitating market. Stock prices have doubled from March 2009, their low point during the Great Recession.

It?s the?first time ordinary folks have sold during a sustained bull market since relevant records were first kept during World War II, an examination by The Associated Press has found.

and?

?People don?t trust the market anymore,? says financial historian Charles Geisst of Manhattan College. He says a??crisis of confidence? similar to one after the Crash of 1929 will keep people away from stocks for a generation or more.

What is at the core of this mistrust or doubt?

People who think the market will snap back to normal are underestimating how much the Great Recession scared investors, says Ulrike Malmendier, an economist who has studied the effect of the Great Depression on attitudes toward stocks.

She says people are ignoring something called the ?experience effect,? or the tendency to place great weight on what you most recently went through in deciding how much financial risk to take, even if it runs counter to logic.Extrapolating from her research on ?Depression Babies,? the title of a 2010 paper (embedded below) she co-wrote, she says?many young investors won?t fully embrace stocks again for another two decades.

?The Great Recession will have a lasting impact beyond what a standard economic model would predict,?

But it?s not just ordinary folks, its professional investors too?

Public pension funds have cut stocks from 71 percent of their holdings before the recession to 66 percent last year, breaking at least 40 years of generally rising stock allocations

as old ?lessons? or myths are dismissed?

And?old assumptions about stocks are being tested. One investing gospel is that because stocks generally rise in price, companies don?t need to raise their quarterly cash dividends much to attract buyers. But companies are increasing them lately.

Dividends in the S&P 500 rose 11 percent in the 12 months through September, and the number of companies choosing to raise them is the highest in at least 20 years, according to FactSet, a financial data provider. Stocks now throw off more cash in dividends than U.S. government bonds do in interest.

Many on Wall Street think this is an unnatural state that cannot last.

As it seems, for once, a positive lesson is being learned?

?People aren?t looking to swing for the fences anymore,? says Gary Goldstein, an executive recruiter on Wall Street, referring to the bankers and traders he helps get jobs.??They?re getting less greedy.?

The lack of greed is remarkable given how much official U.S. policy is designed to stoke it.

But the powers that be are not happy about it?

?Fed policy is trying to suck people into risky assets when they shouldn?t be there,? says Michael Harrington, 58, a former investment fund manager who says he is largely out of stocks.??When this policy fails, as it will, baby boomers will pay the cost in their 401(k)s.?

We?ve noted for years that a strong rule of law ? including prosecuting white collar criminals for fraud ? is?essential to restoring trust in the economy.

But ? instead of enforcing the rule of law ? the government has become?more and more blatant in its corruption:

The top white collar fraud expert in the country says that the Bush and Obama administrations?broke the law by failing to break up insolvent banks? instead of propping them up by bailing them out.

And the Special Inspector General of the Tarp bailout program?said that the Treasury Secretary lied to Congress regarding some fundamental aspects of Tarp ? like pretending that the banks were healthy, when they were?totally insolvent. The Secretary also?falsely told Congress that the bailouts would be used to dispose of toxic assets ? but then used the money for something else entirely. Making false statements to a federal official is illegal, pursuant to?18 United States Code Section 1001.

***

The government made it?official policy?not to prosecute fraud, even though?main business model adopted by the?biggest financial crime in world history, the?largest insider trading scandal of all time, illegal?raiding of customer accounts and?blatant financing of drug cartels and terrorists have all gotten away scot-free without any jail time.

***

While Iceland?prosecuted its top criminal bankers, and thus quickly got through its financial problems and now has a vibrant economy, the American government has done everything it can to?cover up fraud, and has been?actively?encouraging criminal fraud andattacking those?trying to blow the whistle.

The rule of law is now as weak in the U.S. and UK as many countries which we would consider ?rogue nations?. See?this,?this,?this,?this,?this,?this,?this,?this,?this,?this and?this.

***

Moreover, U.S. government personnel are?on the take. They have become so corrupt that regulators are?literally sleeping with industry prostitutes ? while they pimp out the American people.

The corruption of government officials is?staggering, and the system of government-sponsored rating agencies had at its core a model of?bribery.

We?ve gone from a nation of laws to a?nation of powerful men making one-sided laws to protect their own interests ??in secret. Government folks are?using laws to crush dissent. It?s gotten so bad that even?U.S. Supreme Court justices are saying that we are descending into tyranny.

We noted in 2008 that?the only way to fix the bad economy is to throw the bums out who caused ? or are now causing ? this mess:

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said:

?Who you are speaks so loudly I can?t hear what you?re saying.?

Its like a thief who has been arrested 5 times for burglary. Even though he says all the right things to the judge at sentencing, the judge is still going to throw the book at him.

If the thief is appointed to head a government commission on corruption, do you think people will have confidence in the commission or its proposed actions?

[Obama, Geithner, Bernanke and Holder - kuje] Paulson, Bernanke, Bush, [and the rest of the gang before them] may be saying nice things about fixing the economy, shoring up the financial system and helping American citizens, but people don?t believe them anymore. They?ve been proven liars one too many times.

While the [government] is doing everything in their power to prop up?the stock marketuntil they are out of office (or at least until after the election), the problem is them: Americans and people everywhere distrust [government] so much that they see through every superficial magician?s trick that might have worked when people had a less jaundiced eye.

People have woken up to the scam. Americans are no longer quite so gullible about how ?good? their government is. They hate [both the Dem and GOP leadership].

Who they are speaks so loudly that we can?t hear what they?re saying.

The only thing that can restore confidence in the economy and the financial system is to replace the whole lot of them (tar and feather them) with honest leaders who will do what?s best for the people.

Forget the ?toxic debt? that the talking heads keep referring to. The only way to restore confidence is to get rid of the ?toxic leaders? who caused the mess.

Watch the Scariest Skiing Lesson of All Time

When it comes to teaching a kid to ski, we can all be fairly sure this guy's doing it wrong.

[More from Mashable: Chuckle at the Best News Bloopers of 2012]

Here's a quick synopsis of the video above (which is best seen to be believed): Person identified by Hypervocal as "jackass dad" sends a small child -- who clearly has little to no skiing experience -- gliding down a rather formidable slope. Gliding turns to hurtling as the kid loses control and shrieks in terror while picking up speed. "Jackass dad" instructor's expert advice? Simply yelling "Pizza!" repeatedly and with increasing aggression.

[More from Mashable: Kobe Bryant Finally Joins Twitter ? Kind Of]

Eventually, the child tumbles, yard sale style. He cries. Then "Jackass dad" has more words of wisdom: "Good job, dude! Dude, you survived!? He goes for the high five, but the kid's not having it. Some small measure of justice is served.

Leaked BlackBerry 10 slides reveal video chat

48 min.

In a shareholder meeting last?summer, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said the company was thinking about adding video chat to BBM when BlackBerry 10 hit the streets.

Newly leaked slides seem to suggest the feature has indeed made the cut and will be coming to a BB10 device near you when the new OS launches on Jan. 30, along with a new task manager.

Normally, we take leaked slides with a hefty pinch of salt. These images look fairly legitimate, however. Plus,?Engadget reports that the images have been "removed by request" at several sites across the Web, including the two CrackBerry forum posts that first revealed the pictures.

According to the slides, the video chat feature includes screen-sharing capabilities, a la Skype. The BBM 7 update earlier this month already added VoIP functionality to the service, though it's limited to your BBM contacts and will only work over Wi-Fi connections, not cellular. If the slides prove accurate, we'd expect the video chat feature to sport the same limitations.

Another slide shows "BlackBerry Remember," which???as you can see above???looks to be some sort of calendar-slash-to-do list-slash-project management tool, complete with Microsoft Outlook (and possible Evernote) integration.?

Intrigued? Expect to hear more at BlackBerry 10's launch on Jan. 30?if the slides are legitimate. LAPTOP will be covering the event in full.

SWAC Girl: Family snow day ... sledding, chili, board games

?The day-after-Christmas snowstorm yesterday left 4-6 inches of snow and ice in the Shenandoah Valley and, while we got out and roamed during the storm, the wind-driven sleet stung bare skin and made being outdoors cold and challenging.

?Today the sun came out and, though the temperatures remained cold and the wind blew, it was perfect for sledding on the hill behind our house. Our new son-in-law, who grew up in Atlanta, had never been sledding before so today provided the perfect opportunity for him to take part in this fun wintertime activity. He donned the proper winter gear and chose one of the many sleds that our kids have used throughout the years, and hit the trail.

?The icy surface made fast snow, and sledding runs were exciting as we zipped across the frozen precipitation. Runs began at the top of the hill and continued as far as the sledder was willing to go before climbing back up the hill to take yet another run.

?He caught on quickly and was enjoying the experience as much as everyone else.?

?The longest trail began at the top of the hill at the road ...

?... and continued to the bottom of the hill through the trees.

?Their sleds made a trail that went out of sight.

?Victory! He made it all the way to the bottom. The track to his left is where I went into some briary underbrush at the edge of the woods. There were a couple of bumps during the day, and he had brief encounters with several trees that left a bruise or two.

?It may be winter but the swing is still an attraction.

This was one of the tree encounters. He's not hurt ... he's lying on the ground laughing.?

It was a day filled with fun and laughter and good times, a reminder of the years our children were young and this was an everyday part of our lives whenever we had snow. They could hardly wait to get outdoors, and then did not want to go back inside even though they were about to freeze. We would take off cold, wet gloves and boots and jackets and hats, and lay them around the wood stove to dry.

Some things never change ... today the wood stove was once again surrounded by gloves and boots and jackets and hats as they dried out for the next adventure into the snow. We stopped for lunch, eating chili and drinking eggnog, and played a board game and took it easy before heading out later in the day for night sledding. It was keeper day, the kind that makes memories.

wise self improvement | self improvement made easy: Leaders Must

If you want to serve as a leader, then actually act like one, and be a leader. That means a leader must step forward while others stand on the sideline. Judge someone as a leader not by what they do regarding popular programs and ideas. Rather they must be judged by whether or not they stand up for what they believe, and take what are often difficult or challenging positions. Certainly it is challenging and even stressful at times to stand alone on principle, if you really believe in something. Leadership is about inner strength and fortitude, and doing and saying what needs to be do e, even if it may at times be unpopular or out of fashion.

1. I recall serving for nearly a decade, many years ago, as the Treasurer of a non profit. it seemed obvious to me that this particular organization, if it did not take steps to address putting their financial house in order, would soon be facing the prospect of insolvency. Although I was often overwhelmingly opposed, I continued to chastise, coerce, and demand that the Board acted responsibly. Years later, almost every one of my proposals was enacted, and although waiting as long as they did had a negative overall compacted fiscal and financial impact, the fact that they eventually did what was needed guaranteed the road to solvency and relevance. The interesting aspect, however, is that the very same people who openly bad mouthed me, and derided my point of view, eventually championed the battle, and were more than glad to take full credit for the accomplishment. However, the important thing is not who got the credit, but that what needed to get done, did.

2. Leadership must never be about one's ego or popularity. Rather, it is about webbing effectively, and bringing an organization to achieve and perform to its potential, and to accomplish worthwhile missions. Great leaders always begin with a vital vision, and that vision always acts to motivate them to commit to a greater extent, try harder, care more, and make more efforts to include others in the quest. The true mark of a great leader is not only getting followers to care, but developing the ones with the most potential, to become future true leaders.

It all begins with a leader's adherence to a basic principle or tenet, and using that to bring himself to bravely take a stand, when others resist. All organizations benefit from great leadership.

Norman Schwarzkopf Dead: Retired General Dies At 78

WASHINGTON ? Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.

The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 from complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.

He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.

Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 ? but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait two years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, Schwarzkopf commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily on charitable enterprises in his later years, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000, but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In early 2003 he told The Washington Post that the outcome was an unknown: "What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan."

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004 he sharply criticized Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included erroneous judgments about Iraq and inadequate training for Army reservists sent there.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case. That investigation ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for murdering famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H" stood for, he would reply, "H."

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the Iran's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of the first Gulf War and its impact on the second Gulf War, he told The Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but ... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, `Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf War role, he said: "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told The Associated Press. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

___

Stacy was the AP's Tampa, Fla., correspondent when he prepared this report on Schwarzkopf's life; he now reports from the AP bureau in Columbus, Ohio. Associated Press writers Richard Pyle in New York and Jay Lindsay in Boston contributed to this report.

A complete guide on debt relief for distressed debtors - ProducersWeb

Past the massive economic mayhem of 2008, loads of individuals have started confronting some real-life financial problems. With the
rising expenses in gas, fuel, food, electricity and every other indispensable item, it?s no more shocking to see a lot of people facing troubles in making ends meet. Under such tight fiscal circumstances, credit cards seem to be the easy way out. Quite obviously, constant swiping of credit cards may land you in a sea of credit card debt problems. Owing to a high rate of interest, a majority of the people fail to make their credit card bill payments. Other factors like unemployment and ill health could also be the reason behind defaulting on your credit card bill payments. Whatever your reason might be, the fact remains that once you?re in debt, you need to pay them off. Nowadays, there various debt
relief options available in the market.

Debt often leads to depression. While debt solutions are available for each and every debt situation, people often tend to believe that there?s no way out of the debt trap. From debt consolidation to debt settlement and budgeting to debt management, options are many. However, with so many debt help options available in the market, it?s advisable to go for the one that?s perfect for your individual debt situation.

What debt relief is all about?

Debt could both be a headache in itself and an indicator of a bigger monetary problem. Debt is pretty traumatic since the money you earn today is used to repay the debts you incurred in the past. Besides, the interest connected with debt makes debt all the more expensive to refund. Nevertheless, there are options available for distressed debtors in the form of debt help. With debt relief options, a portion of the outstanding debt amount is forgiven or at least the accumulation of the debt is decelerated.

Even so, some debt help programs must be avoided because of their fraudulent practices. Your initial step should be to find a certified consumer credit counselor who is capable of providing you with financial information and guidance on fiscal arrangement, credit card debt, debt management, bankruptcy, due mortgages and home buying.

How does debt relief work?

For people feeling as if they?re getting suffocated with debt, debt relief programs are the best option. A credit counselor generally helps you in the debt relief process. You may contact a good credit counselor through telephone, email and in person. This counselor generally helps you in avoiding any legal initiative that a creditor might take and make a reimbursement plan that?s ideal for everybody involved. A credit counselor generally furnishes you with sound financial planning and information so you can better manage your funds in the upcoming days. If you?re facing serious debt problems, a debt management program could also prove to be beneficial; it helps you in getting debt-free gradually by paying a fixed monthly amount to the debt relief company, which then distributes this money among all your creditors.

How To Successfully Market Any Online Business Idea - Maynas Eric

It comes as no surprise that successful Web marketing involves a great deal of effort on your part. No matter how hard you work, you will only increase your income if you know exactly what you are doing. It does no good to work very hard at pointless tasks. Make sure you have a focus in the right area and that is towards being profitable. You get there by incorporating the tips below.

Testing your email marketing will help you decipher what works and what doesn?t in terms of getting action from your customers. Do some split group tests. Develop an email campaign, then change one aspect of the creative to make two forms of the email. You could use two dissimilar subject lines, intro paragraphs, or calls to actions. Send the two different versions to two equal-sized groups customers to see which version is more successful. Find the most successful one and incorporate it into your campaign.

Producing online videos that include tags can help your online marketing campaign succeed. Within the video?s description, be sure to include a link to your website. This will have a big impact on the amount of people who visit your website.

TIP! A well-designed website is the first step toward increasing your search engine ranking. This will be the first, and one of the most important, steps for anyone building a web business.

The anonymous nature of doing business online can seem impersonal. This is especially important for small business owners who need to use relationship building and personal selling to retain customers.

Use a banner that has your brand or slogan on it. Using a banner will impart a professional look to your website and provide useful information about your product or service. Make it easy for customers to order products and services.

Make sure your purchasing software uses strong encryption. Open a Paypal or similar account that lets you have a secure transaction system for your website. In addition, you should require customers to set up a password-protected account prior to providing you with their personal data and payment information.

TIP! Advertising is essential for marketing your net online business. When you market your niche, you will see how much of a success it will create.

Make a subscription service to sell the products you have on your site. For instance, if they regularly purchase computer paper, consider offering a discount if they agree to purchase a box each month.

An FAQ page is a great way to familiarize people with your products. Take the time to develop questions that allow for answers full of product suggestions. Phrase the questions so you have an opportunity to offer your products without it being too obvious.

Online advertising is a great way to get attention and draw people to your site. It?s not free, but it is a sound investment if you pick the right venue. Make certain to chose the site your ad will be seen on wisely; it should be very popular and a great place to showcase your business.

TIP! You are going to need to build and maintain trust with your customers. Do not provide advertising content that cannot be supported by evidence.

Avoid seeing Internet marketing as job replacement, but more as a hobby. If it turns out that your website becomes popular and has good potential, then you can consider going into it as a full-time job.

Consider sending freebie materials you plan to distribute to free online directories. Use multiple directories or sources if you are publishing and distributing a free e-zine. Check out things like site directories, free article directories, free e-book directories and other ways to promote yourself for free.

Try adding a blog to sites that don?t change regularly. The thing here is that content is always king on the web. Any search engine out there eats up new info, so having a blog ensures that your business is always updated. A blog makes it easy to keep your site updated with fresh content.

TIP! Make sure you invest some time to learn at least the basics of web design. There are numerous tutorials available online that cover CSS, HTML and other basics.

Craft your banner ads so that they stand out from the other million banner ads on the web. The more appealing and original your banner ad appears, the more people you?ll have clicking on it.

Give your customers a variety of specials to choose from at the check-out page. A customer can put a few different products in with the order to say thanks. This is an excellent method of getting rid of surplus inventory and stimulating sales. At the same time, the customer feels as if he or she is getting a deal.

TIP! Valuable content is always the starting point of any successful Internet marketing campaign. Constantly analyze your content to make sure it is of the highest quality and exactly what visitors are looking for.

Keeping an eye on what your competitors are doing is very beneficial when you have an online business. Check out what other businesses are doing, and see what improvements they need to make. If you see that your competition is not providing certain services on their websites, offer the same services on your site so that your customers will choose you over your competition.

An important tip to consider when it comes to Affiliate marketing is to follow the saying that tells you to never put all of your eggs into one basket. You want to do this because you do not want to risk money that might not come back to you. Keep your current job until your business takes off.

Latin America: The Next Frontier for Online Market Research ...

Latin America globeThere are numerous Latin American market research companies that have been producing highly insightful online research for many years. ?However, Internet usage throughout the region historically has been much lower than in other developed regions of the world, and thus online research has lagged somewhat behind. Yet over the past couple of years the region?s Internet usage has skyrocketed; according to a comScore report from earlier this year, Latin America?s online population grew faster than any other global region in 2011. Much of this growth is due to increasing mobile penetration, which is projected to hit 130% by 2015 according to a recent study conducted by Pyramid Research. Clearly mobile device usage, including smartphone usage, is beginning to catch up with other parts of the Americas.

The fervent adoption of mobile and web technologies, along with growing populations and strengthening economies, is resulting in significantly increasing demands for products, services and ecommerce throughout Latin America. The economic outlook is on a par with that of the U.S. ? and brighter than many other parts of the world, with the UN?s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean forecasting 2013 growth to be 3.8% on average throughout the region.? Brazil, the region?s lead market, is projected by Bloomberg to grow at a rate of 4.2% next year. With economic expansion expected to continue over the next several years as well, market researchers should be paying close attention to this region?the need for brands to understand how best to market goods and services to Latin Americans will result in a boon for the market research industry.

Attracting the desired respondent bases and keeping them engaged in online research is not without its challenges, however. Latin America is comprised of nineteen countries each with its own cultural and socioeconomic factors that must be considered, and Internet access varies country to country. Still, market researchers who are attuned to the differences and who understand the potential of the region will generate insights that can accelerate this growth. Social media will undoubtedly play a large role in online research recruitment; eMarketer reports that 68.9% of web users in Latin American are regular visitors to social sites (which is well above the global average of 61.9%). Combined with high mobile phone and tablet usage rates, Latin America is poised to embrace new MR methodologies.

Research companies looking to enter into or expand their presence in this region should be seeking out inventive strategies for conducting impactful research with Latin Americans. One such opportunity that Kinesis is electing to take part in is the upcoming Insight Innovation Exchange conference being held March 25-26 in Sao Paulo. This conference series aims to assist attendees in the rethinking of how to best reach today?s consumers globally and generate insights that guide impactful business strategy. Sao Paulo was selected as the host locale for the event since it is the largest city in South America, and a hub of economic and technological transformation in the region.

Latin America is going to be a major focal point of market research activity in the coming decade and, we believe, one of the brighter spots for expansion of online data collection in our industry. There is opportunity to uncover purchase decision insights and drive new marketing strategies throughout this fast growing and influential region like never before.
