Doing a clean install of Vista Ultimate 32 bit on a laptop and Windows Update keeps downloading and installing the current update to the Malicious Software Removal Tool over and over. I've tried unchecking it and hiding it but in about 10 seconds it pops up again.

Install it and there's no error message, but a short while later Windows Update wants to download and install it again.

I've searched the web for this and found people posting about it doing the same thing as far back as 2006.

Microsoft, this is a bug. FIX IT and stop repeating whatever it is you keep doing that makes it happen time after time. I'd think after 15 years of Windows Update, and this same problem with various downloads over that time, that by now they'd have the issue permanently cured.

I know in XP if you uncheck it and hide it, it will just offer you the previous months one. So you need to use the latest version. http://www.microsoft...tion.aspx?id=16

ABC orders drama pilots from Martin Campbell, Maria Maggenti

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Casino Royale" director Martin Campbell is taking on another intrigue-filled project, this time with ABC.

The network has ordered a pilot for the drama "Reckless," which Campbell, left, will executive produce.

The pilot involves David, a resourceful problem-solver whose wife is unjustly imprisoned during a political uprising overseas. Desperately to rescue her, he tries every legal option, but after being stymied by the U.S. government in the name of diplomacy, David moves outside of the law -- and enters "a world of political intrigue, dangerous alliances and high emotional stakes."

Chris Black ("Star Trek: Enterprise") is writing the ABC Studios project.

ABC has also ordered a pilot for the dramedy "Murder in Manhattan." Written by Maria Maggenti ("Monte Carlo"), the hour-long project follows a mother and daughter who team up as amateur sleuths in New York City.

ABC Studios and DarkFire TV are producing.

My Gastric Band Journey to Weight Loss | Health and Fitness | run ...

    ?

The following is a guest article, submitted by one of RJR?s readers. If you are interested in submitting a guest post, please email me:?[email?protected], and put ?Guest Article? in the subject area.

I?ve always been ?the girl with the pretty face?. Tipping the scales close to 100 lbs. overweight, I deserved the title. Three years ago, on March 1, 2010, I made a life altering decision to change my relationship with food forever; I had gastric banding surgery.

    Weighing In

Let me start at the beginning. Weighing in at 9 lbs. at birth, I started life off in the ?pleasantly plump? category. On my 5th birthday, I remember the pediatrician discussing my weight with my mom?

Mrs. H., Meghan cannot gain any more weight. If you maintain her weight, her height will catch up.

I was a Weight Watchers alumna by the age of 8. I thought that I hit ?sugar cereal? gold when my parents allowed a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.

By the time I had reached my mid-twenties, I had been on every diet ever invented and weighed well over 200 lbs. Atkins, doctor-supervised, organic, cleansing, Weight Watchers (my trusty friend!), cabbage soup, high fiber? you name it; I?d tried it.

I even did a 6-month stint in dieter?s hell: 800 calories in protein shakes a day. I religiously walked/jogged 3 miles at the minimum, came home and worked out on my Total Gym for another 30 minutes.

Total weight loss? 35 lbs., but it was short-lived.

I gained 45 lbs. as soon as I started eating solid food again; and by solid food, I mean salad with grilled chicken.

    Starving for Results

After starving myself for six months via a liquid diet, weight loss surgery somehow no longer seemed drastic. I began to research the different procedures and met with several doctors before settling on gastric banding or ?Lap-Band? surgery with Dr. George Fielding at NYU.

What Does My Lap Band Look Like?

In very simplistic terms, my lap-band consists of three parts:

    1. An inner-tube-like device that fits around the top of my stomach, filled with saline solution
    2. A port that sits under the skin right next to my belly button
    3. A thin tube that connects the other two pieces

My ?little? stomach can hold anywhere from a ? cup to 1 cup of food at a time, and it keeps me full for around 4 hours. I visit the doctor?s team about once a month to weigh in and make adjustments to my band, if needed. I also like to check in with my nutritionist, Desi, to make sure I?m eating a balanced diet and absorbing enough protein.

    Protein: My New BFF

Protein is my new best friend.

One of the cardinal ?bandster? rules involves ingesting 60 grams of protein per day. When you are only eating 1 cup of food at time, this involves some creativity and a ton of planning.

My day usually starts with a smoothie: ? banana, 2 tbs. low fat organic peanut butter, vanilla protein powder, skim milk and ice cubes. (Yum.)

Lunch varies. Some days, I bring leftovers. Other days, I make an arugula salad with lemon zest, EVOO, salt & pepper and eat greek yogurt or a hard boiled egg with it.

Dinner is where the magic happens.

I love seafood, so I eat a lot of grilled fish and scallops with spinach (for iron) or asparagus (a fantastic source of fiber). Chili made with ground turkey and kidney beans is a great bandster food because it?s flavorful, low fat and packed with protein and fiber. Once in a while, I?ll get down with my bad self and have a petite filet mignon.

    Banding It All Together

    The bottom line is this:

    I love food.

I will always love food, band or no band.

I live guilt free and have broken the mental chain around my relationship with food.

I am living with a tool that has helped me accomplish a true lifestyle change:?85 lbs. lost.

Meghan is a 30 year old ?bandster? who resides on Long Island, NY. In her spare time, she enjoys singing opera, cheering on Penn State, volunteering, traveling and trying out new high protein recipes on unsuspecting loved ones.

Scammed Football Fan Scores Super Bowl Tickets

Sharon Osgood and her boyfriend are headed to the Super Bowl even after they were bilked out of nearly $6,000 when they thought they were buying the prized football tickets on Craigslist.

Despite the scam, Osgood emerged a winner.

Her story caught the attention of Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard, who offered Osgood?four free tickets and set her up with breakfast with NFL legend Troy Aikman, according to the Mercury News, which first reported her story.

A 49ers representative is giving her a pair of tickets, too, because Osgood wanted to bring her nephew's girlfriend. Her boyfriend's daughter and her nephew are also going. She has one left over for another relative.

"I am so super excited," Osgood told NBC Bay Area on Tuesday afternoon. "I can't tell you how blessed I feel. We were crushed, and then we were elated."

A resident of Hayward, Calif., in the Bay Area, Osgood??was scouring the Internet looking for deals on Super Bowl tickets so she could see her beloved San Francisco 49ers play the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans on Sunday.

She found an offer on Craiglist from someone named "R. Thomas Pham Quan,"?who was selling four tickets for $5,900. He told her that he was a tax attorney in Boca Raton, Fla., and a Baltimore Ravens season ticket holder.

Osgood?texted and spoke on the phone with this person for four days, she said. She wired the money to the man's credit union, and on Monday, received a FedEx package. But there were no Super Bowl tickets inside.

Instead of tickets, Osgood said, she?was sent a picture of quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco with a message underneath that read: "Enjoy the game!!!! Go Ravens!!!"

On Tuesday, the phone number she had been using was no longer working. She said she filed a report with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department late Monday. A spokesman for the sheriff's office was not immediately available to confirm the details.

Osgood said the person sounded so convincing and she felt she "knew" him because they had so many phone and text conversations about the transaction.

"I trusted the guy," she said.

Craigslist warns that buyers should not wire money directly to sellers. Best practices in this online marketing world are that buyers and sellers who connect on Craigslist should meet in public places and pay in cash.

Buyers and sellers on sites such as eBay should heed sellers' ratings listed online, which reflect their number of successful transactions, and pay through PayPal, a secured site owned by eBay.

Osgood was initially worried about going public with her story. But now, she's happy she decided she put a face on her saga. Not only did she score free tickets, but she said she wants to prevent others from falling prey to ticket scammers.

"Who knows? Maybe they scammed other people, too," she said. "I won't ever do this again."

Customer service in sales training technology | White Springs

    Q&A image

I love the buzz that comes with getting a customer up and running. As the Operations Manager at White Springs, responsible for implementation and customer support, we go above and beyond to ensure each and every customer receives platinum support regardless of their size. My responsibilities don?t end after an initial set-up,? it?s just the beginning of an on-going service relationship.

Life ?at the coal-face? of customer service for a software company is a challenging one.? With expanding project ranges delivering additional capabilities across a multitude of platforms we certainly keep busy! 2013 is no exception due to the growth of the Android tablet and Apple iPad markets which are demanding further flexibility and reliability. We recognise the need to create sales training program software to adapt to customer needs. In the sales industry, having the right sales training methodology digitally embedded within business platforms can make the difference between success and failure.

The sales floor doesn?t wait. Neither does the evolution of technology and, for both reasons, I believe it is vital for customer service to operate at the cutting edge of sales and technology. Delivering truly outstanding customer service is dependent on our ability to anticipate customer needs and the technological expertise of the team to provide solutions. Although technology plays an increasing part in our lives, I understand that, due to time and resource constraints, it isn?t always easy for a business to get to grips with the various options and possibilities. At White Springs, we can help companies navigate the ever-changing world of technology.

Our clients, partners and, in turn, the ultimate end-users rely on having the right software to meet sales targets and support them throughout their day. We take pride in ensuring this happens.? In fact, one of our long-standing partners, Miller Heiman, has described the support provided by our entire customer service team as ?phenomenal?.

Poor sleep in old age prevents the brain from storing memories

    Monday, January 28, 2013

The connection between poor sleep, memory loss and brain deterioration as we grow older has been elusive. But for the first time, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have found a link between these hallmark maladies of old age. Their discovery opens the door to boosting the quality of sleep in elderly people to improve memory.

UC Berkeley neuroscientists have found that the slow brain waves generated during the deep, restorative sleep we typically experience in youth play a key role in transporting memories from the hippocampus ? which provides short-term storage for memories ? to the prefrontal cortex's longer term "hard drive."

However, in older adults, memories may be getting stuck in the hippocampus due to the poor quality of deep 'slow wave' sleep, and are then overwritten by new memories, the findings suggest.

"What we have discovered is a dysfunctional pathway that helps explain the relationship between brain deterioration, sleep disruption and memory loss as we get older ? and with that, a potentially new treatment avenue," said UC Berkeley sleep researcher Matthew Walker, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at UC Berkeley and senior author of the study to be published this Sunday, Jan. 27, in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

The findings shed new light on some of the forgetfulness common to the elderly that includes difficulty remembering people's names.

"When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information," Walker said. "But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night."

Healthy adults typically spend one-quarter of the night in deep, non-rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Slow waves are generated by the brain's middle frontal lobe. Deterioration of this frontal region of the brain in elderly people is linked to their failure to generate deep sleep, the study found.

The discovery that slow waves in the frontal brain help strengthen memories paves the way for therapeutic treatments for memory loss in the elderly, such as transcranial direct current stimulation or pharmaceutical remedies. For example, in an earlier study, neuroscientists in Germany successfully used electrical stimulation of the brain in young adults to enhance deep sleep and doubled their overnight memory.

UC Berkeley researchers will be conducting a similar sleep-enhancing study in older adults to see if it will improve their overnight memory. "Can you jumpstart slow wave sleep and help people remember their lives and memories better? It's an exciting possibility," said Bryce Mander, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at UC Berkeley and lead author of this latest study.

For the UC Berkeley study, Mander and fellow researchers tested the memory of 18 healthy young adults (mostly in their 20s) and 15 healthy older adults (mostly in their 70s) after a full night's sleep. Before going to bed, participants learned and were tested on 120 word sets that taxed their memories.

As they slept, an electroencephalographic (EEG) machine measured their brain wave activity. The next morning, they were tested again on the word pairs, but this time while undergoing functional and structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scans.

In older adults, the results showed a clear link between the degree of brain deterioration in the middle frontal lobe and the severity of impaired "slow wave activity" during sleep. On average, the quality of their deep sleep was 75 percent lower than that of the younger participants, and their memory of the word pairs the next day was 55 percent worse.

Meanwhile, in younger adults, brain scans showed that deep sleep had efficiently helped to shift their memories from the short-term storage of the hippocampus to the long-term storage of the prefrontal cortex.

More than 1 brain behind E=mc2

    Monday, January 28, 2013

Two American physicists outline the role played by Austrian physicist Friedrich Hasen?hrl in establishing the proportionality between the energy (E) of a quantity of matter with its mass (m) in a cavity filled with radiation. In a paper about to be published in EPJ H, Stephen Boughn from Haverford College in Pensylvannia and Tony Rothman from Princeton University in New Jersey argue how Hasen?hrl's work, for which he now receives little credit, may have contributed to the famous equation E=mc2.

According to science philosopher Thomas Kuhn, the nature of scientific progress occurs through paradigm shifts, which depend on the cultural and historical circumstances of groups of scientists. Concurring with this idea, the authors believe the notion that mass and energy should be related did not originate solely with Hasen?hrl. Nor did it suddenly emerge in 1905, when Einstein published his paper, as popular mythology would have it.

Given the lack of recognition for Hasen?hrl's contribution, the authors examined the Austrian physicist's original work on blackbody radiation in a cavity with perfectly reflective walls. This study seeks to identify the blackbody's mass changes when the cavity is moving relative to the observer.

They then explored the reason why the Austrian physicist arrived at an energy/mass correlation with the wrong factor, namely at the equation: E = (3/8) mc2. Hasen?hrl's error, they believe, stems from failing to account for the mass lost by the blackbody while radiating.

Before Hasen?hrl focused on cavity radiation, other physicists, including French mathematician Henri Poincar? and German physicist Max Abraham, showed the existence of an inertial mass associated with electromagnetic energy. In 1905, Einstein gave the correct relationship between inertial mass and electromagnetic energy, E=mc2. Nevertheless, it was not until 1911 that German physicist Max von Laue generalised it to include all forms of energy.

New technique sheds light on RNA

Jan. 28, 2013 ? When researchers sequence the RNA of cancer cells, they can compare it to normal cells and see where there is more RNA. That can help lead them to the gene or protein that might be triggering the cancer.

But other than spotting a few known instigators, what does it mean? Is there more RNA because it's synthesizing too quickly or because it's not degrading fast enough? What part of the biological equilibrium is off?

After more than a decade of work, researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have developed a technique to help answer those questions.

The method involves a compound called bromouridine, which can be used to tag or label newly created RNA. Researchers apply the bromouridine for 30 minutes then isolate the RNA to see where the new RNA was made. They call this process Bru-Seq.

On the other hand, the researchers can follow up the bromouridine labeling with a rinse with the chemical uridine for different periods of time. They call this BruChase-Seq because the uridine chases away the newly made RNA so they can look at how the RNA ages over the course of one hour, two hours or six hours. In other words, is the RNA degrading like it's supposed to?

"We can see the whole pattern of all the RNA that's synthesized and all the RNA that's stable vs. degrading. We can sort it out in terms of synthesis and stability and see if a particular RNA is more stable in the cancer cell than the normal cell or if it is taking longer to degrade in the cancer cell than in the normal cell," says study author Mats Ljungman, Ph.D., associate professor of radiation oncology at the U-M Medical School.

"With our technique, we're adding 10-fold more depth to the picture of how genes are expressed," he adds.

Ljungman is part of the Cancer Center's new Translational Oncology Program, which brings together cancer researchers from across the University of Michigan to speed the translation of basic science into clinical trials and new treatment opportunities for patients.

The Cancer Center is currently using gene sequencing techniques to help match advanced cancer patients with potential clinical trial opportunities based on the make-up of their tumor.

In addition to helping with cancer sequencing, Ljungman sees potential for this new technique to help with identifying diseases such as diabetes or inflammation. In the paper describing the technique, published online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers describe how they used it to understand an inflammatory response in cells. The researchers have also used the technique to test blood samples.

With a great deal more investigation, Ljungman envisions that one day the test could potentially be offered to people visiting their doctor as a way to monitor changes in the RNA.

"If something is significantly changed from one test to the next, it could be a red flag or an early warning sign of disease. That would be the broadest use of this technology," Ljungman says.

US to provide aerial refueling for French Mali effort

    Jerome Delay / AP

French fighter jets stand in the airport of Bamako, Mali. The United States agreed to fly tankers to refuel French fighters and bombers attacking militants who have established a foothold in Mali, expanding American involvement in the conflict.

    By Reuters

WASHINGTON - The United States has agreed to fly tankers to refuel French jet fighters and bombers attacking al-Qaida-affiliated militants who have established a foothold in northern Mali, U.S. defense officials said on Saturday.

The decision, in response to an earlier French request, expands U.S. involvement, which so far has been limited to sharing intelligence and providing airlift support to carry a French mechanized infantry unit to Mali.

NBC's Richard Engel expects a support role for the U.S. in the current conflict in Mali with no "boots on the ground." Engel talks to MSNBC's Craig Melvin about the ongoing conflict.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told his French counterpart, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, about the U.S. decision to provide aerial refueling support during a phone call on Saturday, Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement.

France intervened militarily in Mali two weeks ago to halt the advance of al-Qaida-affiliated militants who launched an offensive that threatened the Malian capital, Bamako, in the south of the country.

For two weeks, French jets and helicopter gunships have been pursuing the retreating Islamists, attacking their vehicles, command posts and weapons depots. The aim is to block the advance of the rebels until forces from the ECOWAS grouping of West African nations can deploy to take over the fight.

A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said three U.S. KC-135 tankers would provide aerial refueling as necessary to French aircraft, including tactical jets and bombers. The U.S. planes are stationed at Moron Air Base in Spain.

The defense official said the United States expected the tankers to be involved in the operation for a period of months as needed. They will be operating under the U.S. Africa Command, which coordinates U.S. military involvement with African countries but is based in Germany.

In his phone call with Le Drian, Panetta commended France for leading the fight against Malian rebels affiliated with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and noted that "recent operational successes have helped turn back terrorist advances," Little said in the statement.

Little said Panetta and Le Drian also discussed plans for the United States to transport troops from African nations, including Chad and Togo, to support the international effort in Mali.

Panetta has said the United States has no plans to put combat troops in Mali. Defense officials have said a small number of U.S. military personnel were temporarily at the airport in Bamako to deal with the logistics of the airlift of hundreds of French troops and tons of supplies.

Why Fox News dropped Sarah Palin

After John McCain picked Sarah Palin out of relative obscurity to be his vice presidential running mate, she became a political force of nature. Since then, however, her star has lost its luster within the GOP, and she?s parted ways with Fox News.

Sarah Palin delivers the keynote address to activists from America's political right at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington last February. Palin is out as a Fox News Channel contributor, the network reported Friday.

When the history of US politics in the early 21st century is written, two figures will stand out: Barack Obama and Sarah Palin.

The election of Mr. Obama to the highest elective office ? the first African-American to win the presidency ? did not necessarily signal a new era of post-racial politics. But coming just a generation after federal troops in the South (and a federal judge in Boston) were necessary to desegregate public schools, it was a huge milestone.

Sarah Palin was not the first woman to win a major political party?s vice presidential nomination; that was US Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, Walter Mondale?s running mate way back in 1984.

But the presence of the former Alaska governor on the GOP ticket headed by Sen. John McCain in 2008 invigorated the party ? at the time, at least. And although they lost to Obama and Joe Biden, it wasn?t the blowout that Mondale and Ferraro suffered against Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

Ferraro went on to relative political obscurity, twice losing Democratic Party primaries for the US Senate. Ms. Palin, on the other hand, was just getting started when the returns for the 2008 presidential race were being counted.

How well do you know Sarah Palin? A quiz.

Over the next few years, she became a political force of nature ? stirring a tea party base that thronged to her appearances, scaring GOP incumbents deemed too willing to find common ground with Democrats, and building a very lucrative business that included (for one season, at least) her own ?reality? TV show while launching one of her five children ? daughter Bristol ? on her own entertainment career.

Meanwhile, as with some other conservative ex-elected officials like Mike Huckabee, Palin was given a sinecure of sorts as a commentator for Fox News, which built a studio in her home in Wasilla, Alaska, from which she railed against the ?lamestream media? and anything Obama proposed or did as President.

No matter that Mrs. Palin became the butt of liberal jokes, driving left-leaning bloviators nuts, and giving a huge boost to the acting career of Saturday Night Live?s Tina Fey. Her ?Grizzly Mama? persona ? a sharp-edged folksiness with the occasional rhetorical stumble ? attracted at least as many people as it turned off. ?Run, Sarah, Run!? echoed among adoring throngs urging her to run for the White House.

Although not every candidate she endorsed in 2010 won, her record was respectable.

(AP) ? He's acted, danced and sang his way through movies, television and the stage, making Dick Van Dyke an entertainment triple-threat long before Hollywood used such hyphenates.

The 87-year-old actor, best known for the 1960s hit comedy "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and Disney's big-screen musical "Mary Poppins," can now add lifetime achievement honoree. He picked up that honor at Sunday night's 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

"I've knocked around in this business for 70 years and I still haven't quite figured out exactly what it is I do," Van Dyke said after accepting his trophy from presenter Alec Baldwin.

"The years have been full of surprises for me and a lot of fun. Aren't we lucky to have found a line of work that doesn't require growing up?"

Van Dyke's career has spanned eight decades, starting with work as a disc jockey and a standup comic in the late '40s. He even worked as a national television morning-show host, with no less than Walter Cronkite serving as his news anchor.

But perhaps Van Dyke's most critical career break came in 1960, when director Gower Champion hired him as the male lead opposite Chita Rivera in the new Broadway-bound stage musical "Bye Bye Birdie."

Van Dyke had no professional dance experience, and out-of-town tryouts did not go well. Nevertheless, Champion refused to fire the actor, who would go on to New York with Rivera and win a Tony award for his performance.

About a year later, Van Dyke was starring in his own sitcom, in the role of TV comedy writer Rob Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Three prime-time Emmys for Van Dyke and more than 50 years later, the series remains revered by many critics as one of the earliest models of great workplace comedy.

"'The 'Dick Van Dyke Show' was the most fun I ever had and the most creative period of my life," he said on the red carpet.

During the series' run, Van Dyke also enjoyed big-screen hits, including the 1963 "Birdie" movie and the 1964 all-star comedy, "What a Way to Go!" But biggest of all was "Mary Poppins," in which he introduced the Oscar-winning song "Chim Chim Cher-ee."

"I'm world-famous for my Cockney accent," Van Dyke kidded in his acceptance speech. He has said his British-born co-star, Julie Andrews, told him he never got the accent right.

Van Dyke also saluted the room full of actors who gave him a standing ovation.

"I'm looking at the greatest generation of actors in the history of acting. You've all lifted the art to another place now," he said. "Besides that you're everywhere. You're in Darfur, Somalia, Haiti. You're all over the place trying to do what's right.

"This very heavy object here means that I can refer to you as my peers. I'm a happy man, God bless."

Last year, Van Dyke presented the same lifetime achievement honor to his former TV co-star, Mary Tyler Moore.

These days, Van Dyke sings with his vocal group, The Vantasix, and enjoys life with his wife of one year, makeup artist Arlene Silver. The couple met seven years ago at the SAG Awards.

"They tell me you never work again once you get this award," Van Dyke said on the red carpet. "I'll have to let them know I'm available."

(AP) ? Stan Musial was remembered during a funeral and memorial outside Busch Stadium on Saturday as a Hall of Famer and a St. Louis icon embraced by generations of fans who never had the privilege of watching him play.

Broadcaster Bob Costas, his voice cracking with emotion at times, pointed out during a two-hour Mass that in 92 years of life, Stan the Man never let anyone down.

Costas noted that even though Musial, who died Jan. 19, was a three-time NL MVP and seven-time batting champion, the pride of Donora, Pa., lacked a singular achievement. Joe DiMaggio had a 56-game hitting streak, Ted Williams was the last major leaguer to hit .400, and Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle soared to stardom in the New York spotlight. Musial didn't quite reach the 500-homer club ? he finished with 475 ? and played in his final World Series in 1946, "wouldn't you know it, the year before they started televising the Fall Classic!"

"What was the hook with Stan Musial other than the distinctive stance and the role of one of baseball's best hitters?" Costas said. "It seems that all Stan had going for him was more than two decades of sustained excellence as a ballplayer and more than nine decades as a thoroughly decent human being.

"Where is the single person to truthfully say a bad word about him?"

There was enough room in the large Roman Catholic church for a handful of fans. One of them wore a vintage, No. 6 Musial jersey. Another clapped softly as pallbearers carried the casket from the church to the hearse to the tune of bagpipes.

Among those in attendance were baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, former St. Louis standout Albert Pujols and Hall of Famers Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter, Whitey Herzog and 90-year-old Red Schoendienst, who once roomed with Musial. Joe Torre, a former MVP and manager in St. Louis, and Tony La Russa, who became close with Musial during his 16 seasons managing the Cardinals, sat near the front along with current manager Mike Matheny.

Pujols, who had been on track to challenge many of Musial's franchise records before signing with the Angels 13 months ago, exchanged hugs with Fred Hanser, a member of the Cardinals ownership team, before taking his seat.

Jim Edmonds, a star center fielder for two World Series teams in the 2000s, has the same last name as one of Musial's sons-in-law. He said Musial informed him that they were distant relatives, and greeted him as "Hey, Cuz!"

"I thought he was kidding at first," Edmonds said. "That's pretty cool."

Jack Clark, a slugging first baseman for the Cardinals during the 1980s, said he perhaps respected Musial most for his decency during baseball's sometimes difficult period of integration in the 1940s and 1950s.

"Stan kind of crossed that color barrier. When people were getting on the African-American players, he stuck up for them. It was a time when you could kind of get your finger pointed at you for that stuff," Clark said. "People loved him, and he loved them right back."

Bishop Richard Stika, pastor at Musial's' church in suburban St. Louis for several years, speculated during the homily about why Musial was never ejected from a game during his career: "I think deep down, that was because he didn't want to go home and face Lil."

Musial's wife of nearly 72 years, Lillian, died last year.

Grandson Andrew Edmonds said the public Musial was no different from the private Musial, the grandpa who bought McDonalds for the family every Sunday. He recalled a fan telling him, "Your grandpa's best attribute is he made nobodies feel like somebodies."

Pallbearers included Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III, Musial grandsons Andrew Edmonds and Brian Schwarze, and the retired star's longtime business partner in Stan the Man Inc., Dick Zitzmann.

After the service, the hearse and vans filled with the Cardinals' delegation drove to Busch Stadium, where Musial's family laid flowers at the base of one of his statues ? the one that made the move across the street from the old Busch ? while being serenaded by "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Color guards from the city's fire and police departments flanked the statue, along with more than a dozen ballpark ushers. A single Clydesdale walked slowly down the street.

Cardinals closer Jason Motte shook his head.

"This is nothing like I've ever seen," he said.

During a funeral that was almost entirely upbeat, son-in-law Martin Schwarze got the biggest laugh when he recounted a 1995 radio interview with Jack Buck during which Musial was asked how good of a hitter he'd have been had he played in the modern era. Musial, who finished with a .331 career batting average, replied he probably would have batted about .275, and Buck said "Whoa, whoa, whoa," that's way too low.

Then Musial added with a chuckle, "Hey, Jack, I'm 75!"

Thousands filed through the Cathedral Basilica at Musial's six-hour public visitation on Thursday, and hundreds more attended the service.

Hundreds more were waiting at the more prominent of the two Musial statues outside Busch Stadium, where fans have gathered since Musial died after several years of declining health. Next to the statues were flowers, balloons, teddy bears, helmets, autographed items and a homemade sign that read "Thanks for the memories. You live in our hearts, No. 6."

"He's been a hero to us for four generations," Kathy Noorman of Wentzville, Mo., said, speaking near the statue. "He was such a good man, somebody you can hold up to grandkids and your own kids as an example of who they should be."

Mark Springman, 57, of Alton, Ill., brought a bottle of champagne to the statue shrine. He saw Musial play in 1963, Stan the Man's final season, and has been a season-ticket holder for about 15 years.

"He was more than a ballplayer," Springman said. "He was the man."

Head Coach Tom Moore Picks Up Career Win No. 100; Men's ...

    January 24, 2013

HAMDEN, Conn. ? Quinnipiac University men's basketball head coach Tom Moore picked up his 100th career win on Thursday night, as the Bobcats made it eight straight wins over Central Connecticut with an 85-78 victory at the TD Bank Sports Center. Moore became the fastest coach to win 100 in the Division I era and second fastest coach all-time in program history.

Shaq Shannon (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the difference-maker for the Bobcats ? as the junior guard poured in 18 points which included six from long-range. He was the first player to hit six threes since James Johnson accomplished the feat back in the 2010-11 season with seven against Bryant. Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) added 13 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, while fellow front court mate Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.) chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds. Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Md.) finished with 17 points making it five straight with at least 10 points. Dave Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) composed a steady offense with eight assists, four points and three rebounds.

The game didn't see more than a six-point separation through the first half and most of the second. However, trailing by one point with 13:08 showing on the clock, Quinnipiac (7-12, 3-4 NEC)?opened up its largest lead of the game with a 16-6 run behind three, threes, two from Shannon, and several easy buckets underneath. The Blue Devils would cut their deficit to three points in the waning minutes, but clutch free-throw shooting in the closing seconds put the game out of reach en route to the historic win.

The two teams matched up very evenly throughout the game; but it was the discrepancy on the boards that granted Quinnipiac the edge it needed. The Bobcats garnered a plus-20 margin on the glass, 51-31 - which also included 17 on offensive end and 15 second chance points. Both teams shot 47 percent from the floor and only combined for 14 turnovers.

Kyle Vinales, the NEC's leading scorer, led the Blue Devils with a game-high 32 points on 12-of-20 shooting. Matt Hunter added 13, while Joe Efese and Malcolm McMillan each had 10.

In a series that dates back to the 1956-57 campaign, wins are beginning to pile up for Quinnipiac. Over the last five seasons, QU has won nine out of the last 10 games and is now riding a seven-game winning streak.

Prior to tip-off, the Quinnipiac University and Central Connecticut State University Departments of Athletics and Recreation recognized three-time National Champion and former UConn men's basketball head coach Jim Calhoun for his leadership in bringing the entire state of Connecticut the highest level of recognition and success in Division I men's basketball. Quinnipiac and CCSU presented Coach Calhoun with a donation that will go directly to the Jim and Pat Calhoun Cardiology Center.

The Bobcats will wrap up the fourth week of NEC play on Saturday afternoon against Fairleigh Dickinson. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. with all the action televised live on MSG and FCS.

Fans interested in purchasing season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign can call the QU Ticket Office at 203-582-3905, visit the official website of Quinnipiac athletics, www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com or make a trip to the TD Bank Sports Center Ticket Office.

Roadside bomb kills 10 in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? A police truck packed with officers and detainees struck a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan's largest city, killing 10 of those aboard, officials said Sunday.

It was the fourth deadly bombing on a day that left at least 24 people dead across the country.

The Kandahar city police had driven out into a residential neighborhood of the city late Saturday to inspect a bomb that had been found there, said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial government. They detained three suspects and were driving back with them in a police pickup truck when the vehicle struck another explosive buried in the road. Eight police officers and two detainees were killed in the blast.

Earlier Saturday, 10 policemen were killed when a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up in Kunduz province in the north. Meanwhile, a remote-controlled bomb planted on a bicycle exploded in the eastern city of Ghazni, killing one police officer and a civilian. And officials in Farah province in the west said Sunday that two police officers were killed there Saturday evening when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb.

Attacks by insurgents are a daily occurrence around Afghanistan and the Afghan police with their unarmored pickup trucks and remote checkpoints are a common target.

5 Direct Mail Marketing Tips for Holidays - Mailbox

Direct mail can be an effective tool

Today?s post comes courtesy of business contributor?Roger Pahuriray

The holidays are a special time. If you have not yet started planning a direct mail marketing campaign, you have best be getting a move on. The holidays are a great time for you to do some promotional activities for your brand and product offering. The holidays are also a time when customers are really looking to purchase items. Thus, it is important to make sure that you get a fair share of that holiday market.

Before you start sending out the usual holiday postcards and catalogues, it is important to note that you are not the only company who will be sending out mailers to their prospective clients. Other companies would also like to promote their products and/or services and secure their share of the holiday market. Thus, it is important to make your direct mail package stand out. Here?s how to achieve that.

    Holiday Design

Enlist the help of a direct mail marketing company. They can greatly help in terms of design to make your mailer look appropriate for the occasion. Also, direct mail marketing companies offer lettershop services that speed up the packaging process and ensure that your mailer has all the right components.

    Dimensional Mailers

As stated earlier, yours won?t be the only company that will be sending out direct mail to clients. When your potential client finds a stack of ad mailers in his mailbox, their tendency is to just chuck it out. But if your mailer has bulk or is three-dimensional, your customer will be curious about what it is. That?s the opening you need. Dimensional mailers naturally cost more but the profits they generate make them worth it. Most direct mail companies offer holiday discounts which could greatly help you in terms of costs.

Give Your Customers Something to be Excited About

Attract them with discounts, freebies or special deals. Create a sense of anticipation by adding special contest prizes which they can win if they avail of your product or service.

    Reward Your Loyal Customers

This season is about giving after all. Reward your loyal customers with discounts, freebies or exclusive deals. For example, if you have a customer who purchased an mp3 player last year, offer them a huge discount on this year?s latest model. If you sell clothes, offer a discount on your most popular pieces or on next season?s collection. This will make your customers feel valued and will ensure that they will be your clients for a long time. These can also help bring back clients who looked elsewhere last year.

    QR Codes

The advent of QR codes present many retail possibilities. You can instruct your lettershop services provider to include QR codes in your mailer representing a free small product that your clients can claim when they scan and send it to you. You can also arrange a scavenger hunt with these QR codes. Have your clients scan as many QR codes as possible. When they rack up a certain number of points, reward them with prizes which may include freebies, discounts, tickets, etc. This will make shopping more fun and exciting for your customer base.

The black market 'liquid gold' in your laundry room

ABC News' Gio Benitez ( @GioBenitez) and Hana Karar ( @HanaKarar) report:

Retailers in Colorado are cracking down on Tide laundry detergent thefts by locking up the product and hiring undercover security guards to patrol their aisles.

The Colorado Retail Council hopes that such measures will help protect retailers from people who are shoplifting laundry detergent at an alarming rate.

"It's a very large problem that we have to spend a lot on and, unfortunately, that cost gets passed on to the costumer," Chris Howes, president of the Colorado Retail Council, said.

Police in Colorado are searching for a man they believe has stolen more than $8,000 worth of Tide laundry detergent in the Ft. Lupton area in Weld County. Police said the male suspect has been caught on surveillance video knocking off six different stores, taking Tide and expensive face lotions.

Tide is one of the most recognized laundry detergents with its bright-orange container. With a retail price from $10 to $20, Tide has become liquid gold on the streets. It can sell on the black market for half the price and it's impossible to track.

"Tide is highly recognizable, it's very difficult to trace and it's easily resold," said Brad Garrett, ABC News consultant and former FBI special agent.

In March, cameras caught a man stealing more than $6,000 worth of the product during the course of 15 months near Minneapolis.

"Tide is a staple item," Lt. Brad Pyle of Prince George's County, Md., police told ABC News in March. "Everybody uses it day in, day out. And it's the most popular brand, so they can move it and get a lot of money for it."

The National Retail Foundation found last year that 95 percent of companies were victimized by organized retail crime.
