Are you a Yo-Yo?? We?ve all done it at one point in our lives.? I was on one Yo-Yo diet after another for years!? The simple truth is that you shouldn?t go on a crash diet plan you should change your eating habits and how you think about food.? This will change your life completely and get you to a healthy weight and you?ll maintain it as well.? However, let?s discuss this subject further by reviewing some facts.
What is Weight Cycling and Yo-Yo Dieting?
First of all, let me give you an example of what Weight cycling and Yo-Yo dieting is in a very simple explanation.? It?s New Year?s Eve and you?ve decided that tomorrow on the first day of the new year, you will start? your diet to lose 50 lbs.? Tomorrow comes and you start your diet which in many cases is a starvation or deprivation diet plan.? This is very hard to stick to because you haven?t changed your thought process about food so you really don?t like what you?re eating.? It?s hard to stick to anything that you don?t like to do or don?t believe in, right!? I personally have been down this road.
So you starve yourself into losing the 50 lbs.? Now because you didn?t make changes to your behavior, once you see that you?re at your goal weight you stop the eating plan and go back to eating anything and everything.? A few weeks later you see that you?ve gained weight back and even a couple of more pounds too!? You panick and go back to the so called diet you were on and lose the weight again.
Do you see the cycle beginning to occur?? This weight loss and regain of body weight is called weight cycling. When weight cycling is the result of dieting, it is called ?yo-yo? dieting. A weight cycle can range from small weight losses and gains (5-10 lbs. per cycle) to large changes in weight (50 lbs. or more per cycle).? Some experts believe that weight cycling may be harmful to your health and that staying at one weight is better than weight cycling, even for those people who are obese. However, there is no convincing evidence to support these claims, and most obesity researchers believe that obese individuals should continue trying to control their body weight despite some weight cycling.
Is Weight Cycling and Yo-Yo Dieting Harmful?
Now let?s look at some facts. So far, studies have not definitively shown that weight cycling and yo-yo dieting are harmful. However, more research is needed on the effects of weight cycling in order for us to truly know if it?s harmful or not.? In the meantime, a fear of weight cycling should not stop an obese person from achieving a modest weight loss. Although health problems associated with weight cycling have not been proven, the health-related problems of obesity are well known.
If you are not obese and have no risk factors for obesity-related illness, focus on preventing further weight gain by increasing your exercise and eating healthy foods, rather than trying to lose weight. If you do need to lose weight, you should be ready to commit to lifelong changes in your eating behaviors, diet, and physical activity.? I?m an advocate for the lifelong change method of controlling weight.? It?s been my experience that this is the only way to really keep your health, fitness & weight in check!
Is Regained Weight Harder to Lose?
Not really believe or not!? It has been said that those who repeatedly lose and gain weight through weight cycling and yo-yo dieting should not experience more difficulty losing weight each time they diet.? I found that I would gain more weight back and therefore, it wasn?t necessarily harder to lose but I now had more to lose!
If I Weight Cycle or Yo-Yo Diet, Will It Make Me Fatter?
Weight cycling and yo-yo dieting has not been proven to increase the amount of fat tissue in people who lose and regain weight.? Studies have found that after a weight cycle, people have the same amount of fat and lean tissue as they did before weight cycling.? Some people are concerned that weight cycling can cause more fat to collect in the abdominal (stomach) area.? Those who tend to carry their excess fat in the abdominal area, instead of in the hips and buttocks, are more likely to develop the health problems associated with obesity. However, studies have not found that after a weight cycle people have more abdominal fat than they did before weight cycling.
In my weight loss journey, I found that each time I went on a diet, loss weight and regained, I gained more back than when I started the Yo-Yo dieting.? It wasn?t until I committed to changing my life by the food I ate, exercising and mindset that I truly got the results.? So, it?s my recommendation that you start by changing the way you think about food and develop an exercise plan.? Make small baby steps you don?t have to change everything in one day in fact I don?t recommend you do that at all.? Make a small change like I?m going to eat on a schedule, eat smaller portions and drink 8 glasses of water or I will not eat any fried foods only baked, broiled or boiled!? Keep up with the small change for a week or so then, make another change.
I think sometimes the reason why we fail when trying to lose weight, get healthy & fit is because we try to do too much all at once.? Remember that change is not easy for most of us so take those baby steps!? So, take the following action steps today and leave your comment as to the action step you did take.
