How Much Do Antivirus Rankings Matter to You?

How Much Do Antivirus Rankings Matter to You?German antivirus lab AV-Test recently tested several security suites. Most of them declined since a few months ago, particularly Microsoft Security Essentials, our favorite Windows antivirus app. We still love it, but the recent AV-Test makes us wonder: How much do these ratings matter to you?

Microsoft Security Essentials was half a point shy of passingthe AV-Test, due to problems detecting zero-day threats. Other recent tests by AV Comparatives were better, but still mixed. That said, Microsoft Security Essentials has never been the top ranker in these tests (usually the top spots are the paid security suites), but it's something worth pondering.

What do you think? Does it matter to you?

Rajon Rondo, Kris Humphries Fight: Celtics-Nets Brawl After Foul On Kevin Garnett (VIDEO)

At what point does Rajon Rondo transfer his anger from Kris Humphries to Kevin Garnett? Or will the Boston Celtics' point guard just be upset with himself after he sees a replay of the ruction under the rim that resulted in his ejection during a game against the Nets and cost him a record that he's been chasing for months?

With the Celtics trailing, 51-35, late in the second quarter on Wednesday night, Rondo reacted to a foul on Kevin Garnett committed by Nets forward Kris Humphries by instigating a brief scuffle. Although replays (and this lovely SB Nation GIF) suggest that Garnett may have flopped after absorbing contact from Humphries on a drive into the paint, Rondo only saw his teammate hit the floor. He heaved Humphries back under the rim. Teammates from both sides rushed toward the shoving match and the scrum spilled into the seats. When the referees finally settled everything down, Rondo, Humphries and Gerald Wallace were all ejected from the game.

"Rondo initiated everything that proceeded after the foul," referee James Capers said in a post-game statement, via Boston.com. "And when he and Humphries go into the stands, they are involved in a fight. Fighting is an automatic ejection."

WATCH VIDEO ABOVE

Whether it was a flop or a hard foul that sent KG to the parquet floor, Rondo's reaction snapped his streak of 37 consecutive games with at least 10 assists. Rondo's streak is tied for 2nd on the all-time with John Stockton. The team had made no secret that he was chasing Magic Johnson's record of 46 games with double-digit dimes. During a blowout loss to Detroit Pistons earlier this season, Celtics coach Doc Rivers admitted that he put Rondo back into a game just to keep the streak going.

ESPN Stats & Info

Rajon Rondo ejected in 2nd quarter with just 3 assists. His streak of games with 10+ assists will end at 37.

After this game, Humphries took one last shot at Rondo via Twitter and showed off the scratches that he picked up. He tweeted "Anyone know where I can get a quick Tetnis shot in Boston?" and shared a link to an image of the shoulder.

In the other locker room, Rivers didn't find his team's display particularly rabid or respectable. Perhaps most damning, he didn't think there was anything tough about what went down.

?If I?m Brooklyn and the league, you?ve got to think we?re pretty soft, the way we?re playing,? Rivers said. ?We?re a soft team right now. We have no toughness, and that stuff?s not toughness. All that stuff, that?s not toughness.?

WATCH: Cee Lo and Kermit Perform a Duet on 'The Voice'

Kermit the Frog visited Tuesday's results show on The Voice (NBC, Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC). Bulgy eyes and green felt skin notwithstanding, he looked pretty unassuming next to the character to his right. Cee Lo Green, who appeared to be dressed for a St. Patricks Day Parade on Jupiter, sang a duet of "It's Not Easy Being Green" with America's favorite green reptile. (No disrepect to the Geico gecko, or the Warner Brothers frog, but Kermit's got this one.)

Everplans Walks You Through All the Steps Needed to Deal with Death (Yours or Someone You Know)

Everplans Walks You Through All the Steps Needed to Deal with Death (Yours or Someone You Know)Everplans is a site that can help you get through all the steps needed to deal with that universal topic?death?at any stage, whether you are comforting someone who's grieving, have to make funeral arrangements, or want to set up important documents for your family.

Long before you die and especially if you're approaching the end of your life, you probably want to make sure your family members aren't stressed or burdened more than they need to be. Everplans outlines step-by-step what you need to do for both of those stages (e.g., write a will, name a power of attorney, get life insurance) along with helpful related articles and tools. For example, there's a checklist for documents you should organize and share (a topic we think is pretty vital).

Everplans also has advice for if you're helping someone else with end-of-life issues or if you need to take care of funeral arrangements and similar logistics. A Funeral Update tool is in the works to let family and friends know about events like wakes or funeral details.

All in all, it's a great resource that can help reduce stress for everyone during a very emotional, difficult time. As Meetup CEO Scott Heiferman says, it's "for anyone who will die someday?or knows someone who will..."

Texas cancer agency OK'd faulty $11M grant

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Leaders of Texas' embattled $3 billion cancer-fighting effort approved an $11 million grant to a biomedical company even though the proposal wasn't reviewed, according to an internal audit that deepens the troubles of a state agency that has been denounced in recent months by some of the world's top scientists.

The discovery was uncovered during an internal review of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The award to Peloton Therapeutics Inc. in 2010 was among first ever handed out by the agency, and remains one of its largest taxpayer-funded grants to date.

The Associated Press on Thursday first reported the audit's findings, which were later announced by the agency.

Tim Kutzkey, Peloton's acting chief executive officer, declined comment and referred questions to CPRIT. In a statement, the agency said the Dallas-based company was unaware that "CPRIT processes had not been followed."

The cancer institute is home to the nation's second largest pot of cancer-research money, behind only the National Institutes of Health, and has awarded nearly $700 million. But it has come under intensifying scrutiny as several scientists, including two Nobel laureates, resigned in protest claiming the agency was charting a new politically-driven path that put commercial interests before science.

The Peloton revelation is the latest blow to CPRIT, which launched in 2009 to widespread acclaim among scientists and cancer survivors but has spent the past year unraveling. Dozens of scientists have resigned from the agency's peer review panels en masse in recent weeks, some of whom criticized the fund for "hucksterism" and "suspicion of favoritism" on their way out the door.

Pelton's application would have been presented to the agency's oversight committee by Jerry Cobbs, the agency's chief commercialization officer. Cobbs announced his resignation this month, and his last day was set for Friday.

Members of the oversight committee are appointed by Gov. Rick Perry and other state elected leaders. The panel has the final say on whether an award is funded, but under agency rules, all applications must be reviewed by an outside panel of peer reviewers who evaluate the scientific and commercial merits of the proposal.

The agency's statement did not explain how Pelton's application made it through the process without anyone noticing that a review never took place. It only said that Cobbs "improperly included" the proposal in a slate of other recommendations to the oversight committee in December 2010.

Attempts by the AP to reach Cobbs were not immediately successful Thursday evening.

Bill Gimson, the executive director of CPRIT who vowed that his reeling agency would recover from the growing onslaught of criticism at its annual conference in October, said in response to the audit's findings that the agency must have the state's trust.

"We proactively initiated this comprehensive review in the effort to be transparent and ensure good stewardship," Gimson said.

Peloton's funding has been halted and that the company's application is undergoing a second review, the agency said.

Started behind a push led by cancer survivor Lance Armstrong and Perry, CPRIT spent most of its first five years basking in praise and industry awe of the unprecedented amount of taxpayer dollars committed to a state-run, cancer-fighting effort. But those plaudits abruptly gave way to rebukes starting in May, and the fissures came from within.

Dr. Alfred Gilman, the agency's chief scientific officer and a Nobel laureate, announced his resignation following a $20 million award that never received a full scientific review. The money was for a so-called incubator project at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the country's top research institutes.

Gilman accused the agency's oversight board of ramrodding the project through the application process, despite the proposal being just six pages long. Gimson has said the type of proposal didn't require a full scientific review under agency rules but has since conceded missteps in how that award was handled.

Boats imported from USA need CE marking to sail on European waters

Those, who are looking to purchase a boat and wants to sail on European waters, will certainly have to ensure that the boat is CE marked. The law applies in most of the European states and the logo states that the particular vessel has passed the European Union's Recreational Craft Directive's standards. CE is an indispensable official marking that is required for boats in Europe prior they can be imported and put into waters. This logo ensure buyers that they are buying or importing a safe and eco-friendly product, and it accomplishes all legal requirements.

When talking about seagoing crafts, the Recreational Craft Directive also checks and then approves the water crafts. It indicates that before they are allowed to put into the water, they are required to meet all the safety rules and regulations. It includes fundamental aspects like the allowable mechanisms noise and exhaust gas emission. The regulation does not just allow a watercraft to sail on the waters of European territory, but also states that it is safe for being operable in the deep seas. Buyers or importers must make sure before purchasing a boat that it should have passed through CE marking process. Check the details and authenticity of marking standards thoroughly.

As far as import boat (importera b?t) is concerned, a certification body inspects and verifies it and its compliance to the rules with the help of a conformity assessment. The body also verifies the documents to make sure that they sufficiently support the product. When the officers are convinced of its compliance, they issue a confirmation certificate to the buyer. The fulfillment of all rules and regulations make sure that the investment is protected, and there are no legal penalties on crafts. Before searching for a service provider one should do some prior research and Internet is considered as one of the finest places.

There are many reliable dealers out in the market, but one should try to find the most convenient and affordable option. While using the Internet, one would find a limitless forum discussing the topic. They will ask few questions regarding the type of water craft to be tested or marked, the prices, the brand etc. This will help in finding the most reputable service provider offering accurate information and on-time delivery. A boat is a hefty investment and luxury purchase; thus, needs to be properly verified and maintained. Take time to evaluate and compare the available offers. Get it CE marked and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Can Reality TV Boost Self-Control? | World of Psychology

Can Reality TV Boost Self-Control?Flipping through one of Psychology Today?s recent issues, my eyes focused on a short article ?Just Give In. Five Indulgences that actually boost self-control? by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D.

What are these five indulgences? Personally, I was hoping chocolate was on the list. (Unfortunately, it?s not!) McGonigal narrows it down to these five things: a single espresso, an afternoon nap, a snack, YouTube and reality television.

The author writes that ?Willpower diminishes as the day wears on, but anything that reduces stress, boosts your mood, or recharges your energy can also reboot your self-control.?

    Even ?reality TV??

Last night, after watching various contestants on a popular reality show sing for 90 minutes, I felt like falling asleep. Willpower? I must be watching the wrong program. Survivor might give me some energy: watching people trudge through swamps and sleep in tents, screaming at each other and falling in ?love? the next episode.

I kept reading, hopeful that the small paragraph devoted to the indulgence of reality television would explain our culture?s obsession with watching other people. People on a screen and not, say, upstairs in a different room or a phone call away.

?Willpower is contagious,? the author continues. ?Many reality shows feature people working hard to overcome obstacles as they lose weight, face their fears, or organize their clutter.?

I paused reading and recalled a past co-worker who spent, unfortunately, at least 30 minutes every single day talking about her favorite show, The Biggest Loser. We worked side-by-side and so this was particularly irritating, but even more so was the fact that she spent time talking to me ? and anyone else who would listen ? about her diets. She had a new diet every week and none of them worked.

I guess the show?s ?willpower? did not translate to her lifestyle. Sort of like how I can?t sing a note despite watching all of these silly singing shows.

The article concludes with ?You can ?catch? extra self-control just by watching someone pursue a goal.? Hmm. While the author of this article believes that television can boost willpower and productivity, I disagree. Watching television is a sedentary activity and it uses very few brain cells ? feeding your dog uses more. [Ed. - Although it may be a common popular perception, there's also little research that supports the idea that reality TV shows can help a person with their own willpower or act as a personal motivator.]

So, what?s the verdict? The reality is that watching reality television is a form of escape. I doubt it promotes ?self-control? (am I the only one who eats dinner while watching television?) but it has ingrained its way into our culture.

That aside, watching the presidential debates far exceeds the drama I have witnessed in any episode of Survivor. In the end, ?real life? is reality.

When your boss doesn't have a clue ? Business Management Daily ...

An incompetent boss?one who is functionally inadequate or insufficient in knowledge, skills, judgment or strength?is annoying at best and damaging to your career at worst.

To keep your career moving forward in spite of a clueless boss, Dorothy Tannahill-Moran recommends that you:

    • Manage yourself. You don?t need a title to be a leader. If you know your stuff, you can chart your own path toward objectives that will have a positive effect on your department and the company. Just remember to keep your boss in the loop.
    • Identify the pain points. Figure out the main negative effects of your boss?s incompetence and come up with a plan to overcome them.
    • Become a teacher. Sometimes you have to train a boss to get him up to speed, so share your knowledge.
    • Find a mentor. Pick someone more competent in your company and ask him to be your mentor.
    • Get a new job. When you think you?ve tried everything, it may be time to find a new job and move on.

Port commission votes for property tax hike - South Sound - The ...

    ROLF BOONE | Staff writer ? Published November 27, 2012 Modified November 26, 2012

The Port of Olympia Commission voted Monday to approve a property tax levy increase for 2013, with commissioners urging passage to address critical port spending needs next year.

The port uses its property tax revenue for environmental cleanup, capital projects and to pay down bonds.

As a result of the increase, the total amount of property tax revenue collected by the port will grow by $100,000 to $4.8 million in 2013 from $4.7 million this year. For the homeowner, the levy rate rises to 20 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation from 18 cents this year. The owner of a $260,000 home would pay about $53 to the port, according to an example shared by port finance director Jeff Smith during Monday?s commission meeting.

The levy increase was approved on the same night that the commission also approved its budget for 2013. The decision to increase the levy wasn?t unanimous at first.

Commissioner George Barner raised concerns about public reaction to the increase but was later swayed by arguments made by commissioners Jeff Davis and Bill McGregor.

?We need to set up the port (financially) ? whether we?re here or not ? for the future,? Davis told Barner. McGregor added that it was needed because the port will be picking up a larger share of the costs associated with the cleanup of Cascade Pole, the former wood-treatment plant on the north end of the port peninsula.

Smith added that the levy increase also was driven higher by a decline in the assessed valuation of property in the county.

All three commissioners eventually voted to approve the levy as well as the budget for 2013.

The budget for next year projects revenue of $10 million for the port, a new high.

Revenue is projected to be higher because of increased activity at the marine terminal due to imports of ceramic proppants from China, a product that is then shipped to the upper Midwest to aid in oil exploration.

Higher revenue at the marine terminal also means higher expenses in the form of wages paid to dock workers, but the port has trimmed expenses elsewhere for 2013, such as administrative costs, lowering them by about $300,000, said finance director Smith before the meeting.

The port has yet to become an organization that can operate without the need for property taxes once expenses and depreciation costs are included, something the port?s critics are quick to point out.

But the port continues to whittle away at its operating loss, projecting a loss of about $1 million next year, down from $1.4 million forecast this year. Once $4.8 million in tax revenue and another $3.8 million in state and federal grant funding is included, the port projects net income of $1.5 million next year.

State law allows port districts to levy up to 45 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Before the meeting started, the commission and the port staff shared a moment of silence for Tony Silva, a longtime port employee who died Sunday from cancer. He was 63.

Silva had worked as marine services manager for the port?s boatworks division, responsible for more than 9,000 boat haulouts during his time at the port. Port executive director Ed Galligan said Silva was a fixture to the local boating community and an expert in boat repairs.

Exclusive: Banks offer to help Sony offload battery unit - sources

    TOKYO | Tue Nov 27, 2012 4:08pm EST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp has been approached by at least three investment banks offering to sell its battery business as the struggling Japanese group looks to offload non-core assets and focus on reviving its consumer electronics business, banking sources said.

Selling the unit, which employs 2,700 people and had sales last year of $1.74 billion, would help Sony cut costs and generate cash as it restructures its operations, three people involved in the preliminary discussions told Reuters.

The company, a byword for innovative gadgetry in the 1970s and 80s, has been battered by weak demand for its TVs in a fiercely competitive market. The TV business has racked up huge losses; Sony's market value has slumped to below $10 billion and ratings agency Fitch last week downgraded the company's debt to "junk" status - a move likely to push up borrowing costs and make asset sales more attractive.

CEO Kazuo Hirai has pledged to rebuild Sony around gaming, digital imaging and mobile devices, while nurturing new businesses such as medical devices. He is axing 10,000 jobs, closing facilities and selling assets. Any disposals would be part of a broader "garage sale" by Japan's leading electronics groups that are hurting in weak markets and tight financing.

Potential buyers for Sony Energy Devices Corp - founded in 1975 as Sony-Eveready, a joint venture with Union Carbide Corp - could include Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry and BYD Co Ltd, a Chinese carmaker backed by billionaire investor Warren Buffett, said one of the sources. Hon Hai is also in negotiations to become rival TV maker Sharp Corp's biggest shareholder.

    FOREIGN INTEREST

Despite a strong yen, interest is likely to come mainly from potential foreign buyers, said the sources, who did not want to be named as the talks are private.

Selling the business overseas may not go down well with a Japanese government that in the past has kept technology at home by promoting alliances between local producers. Panasonic Corp, NEC Corp and Hitachi Ltd also make lithium-ion batteries, though the firms' fabrication technology differs.

Sony declined to comment on the possible sale of the business, which makes lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones, tablets and PCs. "At our corporate strategy announcement in April, (Hirai) said we would explore possible alliances in E-vehicle batteries and battery storage," said spokesman George Boyd.

As with TVs, Sony has struggled to compete against South Korean rivals in a battery business that is worth $18 billion a year. The small cells that power mobile devices now account for around 60 percent of the market, ahead of those used in cars and electrical tools, according to research company IHS iSuppli.

While lithium-ion battery demand has steadily expanded with the boom in mobile consumer electronics, severe price competition has resulted in razor thin margins that favor large-scale manufacturers with weak local currencies.

"The battery business is a prime example of the company's loss-making and unwanted assets. It doesn't make sense for them to keep it," said one of the banking sources.

    FALLING MARKET SHARE

As Hirai doubles down on Sony's strength in consumer electronics, the company has sold a chemicals company, with 2,900 workers, and may also let go its U.S. headquarters building in New York go. At the same time, it has spent close to $2 billion on a U.S. game clouding company and a stake in medical equipment maker Olympus Corp.

Sony produced 74 million lithium-ion battery cells in July-September - almost 40 percent fewer than in the first quarter of 2008, when its output topped Samsung SDI Co Ltd's 110 million and LG Chem Ltd's 54 million, according to Techno System Research in Tokyo. Sony's market share is now 7 percent, dwarfed by Samsung SDI's 27 percent, Panasonic's 21 percent and LG Chem's 17 percent.

Sony's battery unit, which also makes button batteries for watches and smaller appliances and optical devices, has three factories in Japan and two overseas assembly plants in China and Singapore. It has yet to enter the more lucrative business for automotive batteries.

In its most recent filing, Sony valued the battery unit's fixed assets, including production sites and machinery, at 52 billion yen ($633 million). Under Sony's accounting rules, asset sales are typically booked as operating profit.

The cost to protect $10 million of Sony debt against default for five years has edged higher this week to almost $400,000. The CDS spreads had tumbled earlier this month - from above 480 basis points - after Sony said it would raise 150 billion yen ($1.9 billion) through a sale of convertible bonds.

White House Warns Tax Hike Will Curb Consumer Spending

An Obama administration report out today says the typical American household will pay $2,200 in additional taxes next year if the so called Bush-era tax cuts for the middle class are allowed to expire.

The findings from the President's Council of Economic Advisers also states that the net result would be a slowdown in consumer spending by $200 billion in 2013, stunting the economic recovery by 1.4 percent. A decline of $200 billion in consumer spending is roughly equivalent to four times the amount spent by Black Friday shoppers last year, the report said, or the entire sum of domestic auto sales.

The White House's findings are a clear grab for leverage in the impending " fiscal cliff" talks on Capitol Hill, in which the previous administration's cuts have been a negotiating point. But it also largely echoes similar research from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office out earlier this month. Economists warn the automatic spending cuts and tax increases that would be triggered if Congress fails to pass a budget by the end of the year would plunge the country back into recession.

President Obama and congressional Democrats have taken the position of continuing the cuts for households making under $250,000 a year, while allowing those same breaks to expire for higher income earners. The Republican caucus has largely fought to keep those cuts in place across the board, but since this weekend several key members of the GOP signaled they were open to breaking a long-standing pledge not to raise taxes.

"The only pledge we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece. And Republicans should put revenue on the table," Sen. Lindsey Graham, S.C.-R, said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday.

If negotiations are successful, the report claims the economy could still see an immediate negative impact: Uncertainty over possible future tax hikes on the middle class could lead to a slowdown in holiday shopping, stunting the economic recovery.

The White House report hits as millions of Americans turn to "Cyber Monday" for online holiday shopping deals, and coincidentally as Congress returns to session from its Thanksgiving break.

Tips To Finding Happiness In Your Life | Votergate.tv

When contemplating steps you should take in your self improvement, choose those that will work for you. No two individuals are alike, so what works for one person may not work for you. To succeed in reaching the personal development goals you set for yourself, it is important that you educate yourself and never stop learning. The information contained in this article will help you grow as an individual.

Whatever it is that you need to have in your life, make sure you have one thing. You need to participate in life and not watch from the sidelines. Watching life go by, without participating, cuts you off from the world, and humans were meant to get out there and live life.

Keep track of your progress and learn to organize yourself. By separating your goals into smaller pieces, completing the tasks will be easier and quicker. You can use off-the-shelf tools like day planners or diaries to monitor your personal development progress.

TIP! You should always treat others with respect, regardless of their relationship to you or your goals. The treatment you show them is not a reflection of their character but of yours.

Failure can be a harmful and large blow to your ego and self-esteem when working on personal development. It is just a learning experience along your path! You will now know how to deal with the situation and what your weaknesses are. If you look at it that way, when you fail, you should be happy, because you now know more about you.

Are you experiencing difficulty meeting romantic partners? Try meeting someone on the Internet. These days, forty percent of all relationships start on the Internet. You may find one that is looking for someone like you. These websites have their own pros and cons.

Nobody is perfect, and most of us make the occasional dietary error. Unchecked stress can be very damaging to both your mind and your body. Make an honest effort to live life to the fullest without sweating the small stuff.

A common problem for people seeking personal development, is having a goal that is overly vague or difficult to pin down. Therefore, state a goal for yourself that is detailed and specific. Having a specific goal will help you to get better results.

When you are handling depression stay focused on the things you eat and eat more complex carbohydrates. If you are not getting enough carbs, you might have a low serotonin level. Add complex carbohydrates to your diet through increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, brown rice and whole grains.

In order to work on your personal development, you have to be willing to be humble. You will want to learn all you can, once you realize that you have only scratched the surface of all there is to be known. Once you understand this concept, your natural desire to learn and grow will kick in, inspiring you to improve who you are.

Go to the movies with a friend to help overcome anxiety. You will be thrust into a busy setting and out of your comfort zone, but you will not have to excessively socialize with others. You can use the trip as an opportunity to become accustomed to the company of others.

TIP! Approach your life with beginner?s mind. Be both modest and wise.

Becoming more healthy is an important part of developing personally. Creating a healthy lifestyle requires you to stay motivated at all times. When you make your health a priority, you increase your chances of feeling good, which will make it easier to improve other facets of your life.

One important aspect of personal development is making the choice to lead a healthier life. When you feel good physically, you feel better mentally and emotionally too. Not only will you perform better physically and mentally, but you?ll save yourself the time and stress of unnecessary health scares. For these reasons it makes sense to focus on your health and do what is necessary to improve it.

Search for the texts and literature that encourage and inspire you. This could be a holy text for some people. For others, it could just a book of inspirational sayings. Knowing that there is some source of encouragement to which you can turn will improve your mental state and make it easier to face life?s challenges.

Making a conscious choice to think positive thoughts about other people can bring a great deal of good to your own life as well. Thus, never wish down on someone and always pray for the best. You are less likely to get burdened with bad feelings if you are striving to stay positive.

TIP! Don?t solely focus on your outside looks; have a look at the person you are within. Your hair, clothing, and complexion are not the most important things about you.

There are things you can do throughout the day to accomplish more work while at your job. Something you can do is to increase the amount of short breaks you take throughout the workday. This might sound counterproductive, but breaks allow you to refocus and re-energize, allowing you to return and work more efficiently.

Figure out your goals in life, and go after them. Pondering an ideal life without taking the action to make it a reality will inevitably lead to nothing. Take action, and turn your dreams into reality.

If you are looking to achieve success in your life, start by studying those who have already attained great success. Then, intertwine some of their habits into your own success plan. Don?t try to make too many changes at once. Start with two or three fundamentals that can make a difference, and practice those few until they feel natural to you. Experts suggest that it takes three weeks to form a new habit, so persevere and you will change your ways.

Write out a little pep talk for yourself. On a postcard, write down all of your best qualities. Keep it with you, and pull it out if you are feeling discouraged. You might even consider recording the mantra in your own voice, so that you can play it back at any time. What are the benefits of this?

TIP! Good leaders have firm rules, but are also honest. In order to be a leader, you must be firm but gentle, and you must also know how it feels to serve.

The most effective way to increase your success for personal development is to start using the powerful advice above, beginning today. Success can only be achieved if you make a legitimate effort. If you take the time and energy to apply the information you read in this article, you are sure to see great strides being made towards developing yourself into who you want to be.

The harsh reality that the United States has been on a rapid decline for the past decade or so. The vast majority of people point their fingers on the government. While it is true that the elected officials do affect certain aspects of our lives, the most important factor to make our country recover faster is to start with ourselves? by changing our thought patterns and behavior patterns for the better. Orrin Woodward, renowned personal development expert is one of the top authority in creating strong foundations to build stronger and sustainable communities. Orrin Woodward is also a co-founder of the LIFE business, teaching how we can optimize the 8F?s of life, eight fundamental aspects of our lives. Discovering the Community: The Schoolyy Show | Spreaker's Corner

Donald Schoolyy Johnson is the host of The Schoolyy Show, bringing you all the latest news in?gaming, sports, and technology, with a little music in the mix. We spoke to him on how he fell into the wide world of podcasting:

    Do you mind introducing yourself?

Hello, my name is Donald ?Schoolyy? Johnson and I host a talk show here on Spreaker weekdays at 11 AM PDT. I served in the US Air Force for 8 years, and am currently a Federal Officer for The Department of Homeland Security. I am from Southern California, but have traveled to many places around the world. I enjoy promoting and helping others and am active in the Call of Duty Competitive Gaming Community (eSports). My focus in the CoD competitive gaming community is the CoD ladies where I strive to promote and showcase their skills through different events I host that are broadcasted live.

How did you get into the world of broadcasting?

I got into the world of broadcasting mid July 2011 where I would live stream and commentate game play from Call of Duty competitive players. After hosting and broadcasting many online events I found it to be extremely enjoyable and with so much positive feedback, it motivated me to do more in the community and continue broadcasting.

Cool! How did you start podcasting? Had you already been doing it before?coming to Spreaker?

Before live streaming I didn?t podcast but would often listen to many podcasts on the web. While I enjoyed the many podcasts I listened to, I didn?t find any that incorporated good music with tech and gaming reviews as well as other topics in the different gaming communities. I decided I?d try and bring that to anyone who would listen to my podcast. I surfed the web and found Spreaker to be the most user friendly for setting up and doing podcasts. From there I started the radio show The Schoolyy Show?in May 2012.

We?re glad you found us!?How do you pick the topics for your podcasts?

Picking topics for podcasts can be difficult at times, but fun as well. I tend to try and be creative coming up with my own topics that listeners can relate to, but being part of a gaming community as well as being a techie often makes things easier since many topics can come from gaming and new tech products.

Any favorite episodes from your own podcast??

My favorite episode so far is a series I did called Military Talk, where I took listeners on a journey with my experiences in the US Air Force. I enjoy talking about my experiences in the military as those times were some of the best times in my life.

Do you use Spreaker?s interactive features to chat with your fans?

I definitely use Spreaker?s interactive features to connect with my fans. It is a great way to connect fans on a personal level and another way to keep them interested and coming back to listen again. I love the feedback fans give through the interactive features as well, it gives me an opportunity to hear what they want from my broadcasts.

What do you do to reach listeners? Do you rely on social media, or do
you use other channels of communication?

To reach out to listeners I rely on my social media networks. I often post on my website, Twitter and Facebook allowing friends, family and fans to know that I?m going live or that I am live so they can stop by and tune in.

Has this podcast helped you personally or professionally?

This podcast has definitely helped me personally and professionally. It has given me the opportunity to bring another side of me to fans as well as a new way to build a fan base and reach out to more people.

Awesome! Anything else you?d like to share?

I want to thank Spreaker for this awesome interview. I appreciate your continued support for all of us podcaster?s here on Spreaker. For you listeners, thank you for your support and feedback, I appreciate it as well. Don?t forget to tune in to the show weekdays at 11 AM PDT. For more information on gaming events I host and more, visit my website at www.SchoolyyD.com. You can also keep up with things I?m involved with by following me on Twitter @Schoolyy. For all other links I?m associated with visit about.me/donjon247.

Manning to argue against trial in Wikileaks case

    AP

Demonstrators stand in support of Army Pfc. Bradley Manning outside of Fort Meade, Md., on Tuesday.

    ?

By NBC News staff and wire services

The soldier charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history, was appearing before a military court at Fort Meade, Md., Tuesday, seeking to avert a trial by arguing that he has been subjected to "unlawful pretrial punishment" and "unduly onerous confinement conditions."

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning was expected to testify that he was locked up alone in a small cell for nearly nine months at?the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va.,?and forced to sleep naked for several nights ??treatment his?lawyers say constituted illegal punishment ?? and grounds to cancel the trial.

Military judges can dismiss all charges if pretrial punishment is particularly egregious, but experts say it is rare that they do. Military prosecutors in the case maintain that Manning?s treatment was proper ? confining him initially as a maximum-security detainee who posed a risk of injury to himself or others, and after later evaluation changing his status to medium risk.

In a 28-page motion filed in August, civilian attorney David Coombs builds an argument, based in part on dozens of email messages, that Quantico officials operated in a culture where "anything goes" and "nobody is held to account for their conduct," and?willfully ignored the advice of medical professionals who did not support the solitary confinement.

The motion requests that if the court decides to go forward with the trial and Manning is convicted, he should be given 10 days' credit for time served for every one that he spent in "in conditions tantamount to solitary confinement."

A United Nations investigator called the conditions of Manning's time at Quantico cruel, inhuman and degrading, but stopped short of calling it torture.

Coombs, who specializes in representing soldiers, also argues that Manning has been deprived of the right to a speedy trial.

In total, Manning has been held in pre-trial detention since May 29, 2010 ? nearly two and half years.

"By the time the Government actually brings PFC Manning to trial in February of 2013 (983 days after he was placed into pretrial confinement), the Empire State Building could have been constructed almost three times over," Coombs recently wrote in his blog on the case.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com?

But there are few precedents for military judges dismissing charges based on pretrial punishment.

The usual remedy is credit at sentencing for time served, said Lisa M. Windsor, a retired Army colonel and former Army judge advocate now in private practice in Washington.

In a 1956 case, U.S. v. Bayhand, a military appeals court ordered all charges dismissed against a soldier who had been forced during his pretrial confinement to do hard labor alongside a sentenced prisoner. The court ruled that the soldier had been given an illegal order.

Since then, there have been few, if any, cases in which pretrial punishment has led to dismissal of all charges. Lt. Col. Eric Carpenter, chairman of the criminal law department at the judge advocates school in Charlottesville, Va., said he couldn't find one but he couldn't say for sure that the remedy hasn't been granted.

Manning, a 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks while he was working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Manning has offered to take responsibility for offenses that constitute a small subset of the charges against him. The military judge hasn't yet ruled on whether the offer is permissible, and prosecutors have not said whether they would still pursue the charges against him.

If convicted of aiding the enemy???the most serious of 22 charges he faces ? Manning?faces possible life imprisonment.?

Xbox Creator: It's Hard For Sony, Nintendo & Microsoft to Ignore The ...

Ed Fries, co-creator of Microsoft?s Xbox gaming console, believes it is harder for gaming platform makers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to ignore the gaming and app experience that Apple has created, highlighting the iPhone and iPad maker?s creation of a platform that is easy to develop for and affordable for gamers.

In an interview with GameInformer, Fries ? who is now an advisor for the Kickstarter-funded Android gaming console Ouya?? speaks at length about how the console market still has needs that haven?t been met, that there?s a opening for an ?open console that?s digitally distributed, and it?s just not there.?

While Apple hasn?t invested in today?s console market (yet), Fries is mindful of the effect the company has had on it in the last decade, noting that it?s ?getting harder and harder for the traditional consoles to ignore the Apple kind of experience.?

By this, he means that anyone is able to develop for the platform (developers are not blocked by prohibitively expensive certification processes) and that it can cost nothing for a game to be played, let alone updated.

    Fries explains:

Now, you?ve got guys who make games like Fez who can?t do an update to their game because it costs too much, if that game was on iOS that wouldn?t be a problem, but because it?s on XBLA it?s a problem.?Those kinds of ideas have to go away in the next generation. They?ll go away in Ouya, they?ll go away if Apple brings some kind of product into this space, the console makers like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, they have to respond to that, it?s just the future.

Likewise they have to respond to the free-to-play game model, the world is changing, people want this free-to-play experience, game developers want to build free-to-play experiences and the console ecosystem has to adapt to that. It can?t just be $50 product in a box all the time.

The former Microsoft executive refers to the costs associated with updating existing titles on consoles, most notably on Xbox Live Arcade. Back in February, we reported on the hoops that console game developers have to jump through in order to roll out important changes like patching and supporting their games.

Tim Schafer, the man behind Psyschonauts, said that Microsoft charges $40,000 to put up a patch, something that smaller studios and teams might not have when it comes to ensuring their XBLA games are 100 percent playable.

Microsoft has its reasons: it?s?a?strategy?that it employs to ensure that it doesn?t find itself constantly fighting to patch hundreds of game updates, but also that it means developers make their titles as bug-free as possible before launch.

Either way, the Apple (and soon Ouya) experience is set to change that. Fries believes that Apple?s model isn?t the answer to all of the console makers problems, but acceptance and adaptability may play a key role in the success of next-generation consoles and gaming platforms.

Citi Comes Out With Big Bullish Call On Apple - Business Insider

Ap Image of Tim Cook, Photo illustration by Jay Yarow

One of the big calls of the day: Citi is out with a 'Buy' rating on Apple and a price target of of $675/share. That's about $100 per share or 20% above the current price.

Here are the key points of the call, made by Glen Yueng, Walter H. Pritchard, and Jim Suva.

    • The company's pullback is consistent with other big selloffs in the company's history. Those were then typically followed by rallies of 20 to 50%.
    • The selloff is consistent with other large companies that had achieved a size of 4% of the S&P, although those other companies were starting with a larger multiple, so Apple has some downside protection.
    • There are clear risks due to A) size and b) the growth of low-end/low-margin phones, but there is still opportunity for the company.
    • Tablets, in particular, remain a huge opportunity.
    • They point to this chart to show how young and huge the tablet market is (click to enlarge)
    • Despite the rapid growth in tables, the opportunity is enormous, with the total industry growing at 32% per year through 2015.
    • Even in smartphones, the industry will grow globally by 26% per year through 2015, though again, there are risks to Apple on the low end.
    • As for the estimates the lead to the call, they write: "Our target price for Apple is $675, based on the implied multiples derived from growth and value regressions of a sample of large cap technology companies. We believe our methodology reflects the multiples investors ascribe to large cap technology companies. We have found the market is paying an FY2 earnings multiple of 7.23x (Sales Growth %) + 12.51 and price-to-book multiple of -0.058x (ROE) + 4.351. For Apple, our FY2014 sales growth estimate of 17.0% yields an implied P/FY2 earnings multiple of 13.74x. We multiply our FY2014 GAAP EPS estimate of $58.99 by the growth multiple for an implied share price of $810. Our FY2014 ROE estimate of 28.72% yields an implied P/BV 2.69x. We multiply our FY2014 tangible BV/share estimate of $199.76 by the value multiple for an implied share price of $537. We equally weigh our growth and value implied targets to derive an initial target of $674, which we round to $675.
The implied multiples, based on our FY14 EPS/book value estimates are 11.4x FY14 EPS of $58.99 and 3.4x FY14 ending book value of $199.76. This compares to the S&P 500?s multiples of 12.4x earnings and 2.1x book value."

'Revenge' Thanksgiving: Victoria's Mother Is Even More Horrible Than She Is (VIDEO)

"Revenge" celebrated Thanksgiving this week, but it wasn't Thanksgiving 2012. Instead, the show jumped back to 2006, when Emily was first planning her revenge on the family that killed her father. It also gave viewers a chance to spend some quality time with Victoria Grayson's mother, Marion. And if you thought Victoria was mean ...

Hollywood Life wrote that "Marion took the crown for biggest b*tch in town," which is quite a feat considering the other contenders seen on the show.

"You drove a wedge between me and every man I ever loved!" Marion told her daughter. "I should've listened to your deadbeat father. Gotten rid of you before you were even born!"

There were glimpses into key moments for other castmembers, like Nolan having to explain where half a billion dollars from NolCorp went. Also, viewers saw the first meeting between Aiden and Emily, while she was posing as a prostitute.

As for that Thanksgiving dinner, it turned out to be a huge revenge plot of its own orchestrated by Victoria against her mother for years of terrible behavior. The dysfunction in this family runs deep.

Video: The Tragedy of the Euro - Chicago Gold and Silver Investing ...

The Euro is failing right now because of the tragic flaw when it was designed in the first place. In short, what Greece is doing right now is getting in debt and spending the money because they know that someone else will pay for it. Other countries, noticing what is happening in Greece is doing the same thing otherwise they will not get a piece of the pie when the pie finally runs out. No. 1 Notre Dame beats USC 22-13, earns title shot

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? For four straight plays in the waning minutes, Notre Dame's defense was backed up to its 1 with its perfect season in peril.

And on four straight plays, Southern California got nothing.

"We're going to fight," linebacker Manti Te'o said. "That's our name. It doesn't matter where we are."

The Fighting Irish will be in Miami next. With one another hard-nosed victory, they punched their ticket to the BCS championship game.

Theo Riddick rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown, Kyle Brindza kicked five field goals, and No. 1 Notre Dame secured the chance to play for the national title with a 22-13 victory over USC on Saturday night.

Everett Golson passed for 217 yards as the Irish (12-0) completed their first perfect regular season since 1988, earning a trip to south Florida on Jan. 7 to play for the storied program's first national championship in 24 years. Notre Dame's raucous locker-room celebration reverberated through the thick concrete walls of the 89-year-old Coliseum after an Irish win for the ages.

"I'm still in awe," Irish defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore said. "I don't think it's hit anybody yet. We're trying to relish the moment."

Although they did little with flash on an electric night at the Coliseum, the Irish woke up more echoes of past Notre Dame greats with a grinding effort in this dynamic intersectional rivalry with USC (7-5).

Notre Dame's impenetrable defense appropriately made that decisive stand in the final minutes, keeping USC out of the end zone on four plays from the Irish 1 with 2:33 to play. After three straight runs yielded minuscule gains, freshman Max Wittek threw incomplete to fullback Soma Vainuku, setting off a leaping, chest-bumping celebration on the Notre Dame sideline and in the Irish sections of the sold-out stadium.

"Well, that's who we are," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "It's been our defense all year. Our offense is able to manage enough points."

After spending more than a decade looking up at the Trojans, the Irish are back on top of this rivalry with two straight wins in Los Angeles. The school of Knute Rockne, the Four Horsemen and Paul Hornung has new heroes now, from the Heisman Trophy hopeful Te'o to Kelly, who took the Irish from unranked to start the season to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time in 19 years.

"It's definitely a relief to be able to look at the big picture now, but it's a short window," said Te'o, who had a key interception and became the second Irish defender with three 100-tackle seasons. "We can enjoy this, but then we're going to have to get prepared for one more game."

The grind-it-out win highlighted an unforgettable season for the Irish, who began the year with questions about their relevancy and survived some uninspiring performances and nail-biting finishes with their unbeaten record intact.

Notre Dame is likely to face a Southeastern Conference opponent in Miami, but won't know their identities for another week. Alabama and Georgia play for the SEC title in Atlanta.

"The way we looked at it, if we won all of our games, at least we'd give ourselves a chance," Riddick said. "We've got super confidence as a team now."

With the Irish offense repeatedly stalling in the red zone against the Trojans, Brindza went five for six on field goals, even hitting a 52-yarder at the halftime gun. After Brindza's school record-tying fifth field goal put the Irish up by nine points with 5:58 left, Marqise Lee caught a 53-yard pass at the Notre Dame 2.

But after two pass interference penalties, USC failed on three straight runs and an ill-conceived pass against a defense that has allowed just 11 rushing TDs in 30 games.

"They've had a great goal-line defense all year," USC coach Lane Kiffin said. "They've done that to everybody down on the goal line. ... It's just so hard to score touchdowns versus them. When the ball is on the 2-inch line, you'd think you could score touchdowns."

Wittek passed for 186 yards with two interceptions in his first career start for the Trojans, who completed their tumble from the preseason No. 1 ranking with four losses in five games in an enormously disappointing season. Wittek filled in capably for injured Matt Barkley, but USC is headed to a lower-tier bowl in the first year after its NCAA-mandated two-year postseason ban ended.

Lee caught five passes for 75 yards, yet still broke the Pac-12 single-season receptions record established last year by teammate Robert Woods, who had seven catches for 92 yards.

"For a freshman, Max did a great job," Lee said. "We just had a lot of mistakes again tonight. I made mistakes. We have to get better."

Barkley watched from the sideline in a grey hoodie with a sling on his right arm after spraining his shoulder in last week's loss at UCLA. The senior and Pac-12 career passing leader won twice in South Bend during his career, but never got to face the Irish at the Coliseum, sidelined by injuries for both visits.

Barkley still ran down the Coliseum tunnel with the rest of the USC seniors for their final home game. He participated in the coin toss, but could only watch while the Irish opened the game with three clock-consuming drives resulting in 13 points.

USC's much-criticized defensive caution under assistant head coach Monte Kiffin was exploited by the Irish, with Golson patiently finding the sags in the Trojans' pass coverage for 181 yards passing in the first half. Riddick went 9 yards for a TD in the first quarter, but USC also stiffened to hold Notre Dame to field goals twice in the red zone.

Notre Dame held its 12th straight opponent without a first-quarter touchdown, but Wittek found Woods for a 9-yard score on the first play of the second quarter ? just the ninth touchdown allowed by Notre Dame all season long. The Irish took a 16-10 lead to halftime when Brindza hit the second-longest field goal in Notre Dame history.

Te'o made the seventh interception of his phenomenal season when Wittek threw directly to him on USC's second play of the second half. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the third quarter, and USC settled for a field goal with 9:20 to play just a few moments after Kiffin called a timeout right before a play that ended with Lee appearing to catch a pass on the goal line.

Egypt minister says end of crisis 'imminent'

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's justice minister says a resolution is imminent to the political crisis stemming from the president's move to give himself sweeping new powers.

Ahmed Mekki spoke to reporters Monday, hours before President Mohammed Morsi was due to meet members of the Supreme Judiciary Council to discuss the package of decrees announced Thursday. Morsi's move put him above any kind of oversight, including that of the courts. The judiciary council is in charge of the courts.

Mekki has been mediating between the judiciary and the presidency to defuse the crisis, although he did not say on what he based his prediction for its imminent resolution.

The opposition denounced the decrees as dictatorial, and vowed to press on with street protests until Morsi rescinds them.
