A year and a day after an unsteady, glassy- and bloodshot-eyed Jason Kidd crashed his SUV into a telephone poll in Water Mill, N.Y., the new Nets coach pleaded guilty Tuesday to the driving while intoxicated charges.?He is on interim probation and will speak to Long Island high schoolers about drunken driving as punishment.
?Because of his status as a professional athlete, Mr. Kidd is the perfect person to reinforce the important message we?ve been trying to send, which is don?t drink and drive,? Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said in a statement.
Kidd?s attorney, Ed Burke Jr., said his client was at a charity event in the Hamptons before the incident.
It is the second criminal offense for Kidd, a former Olympic gold medalist and NBA champion, who was arrested after hitting his ex-wife in 2001.
Kidd retired following the 2012-13 NBA season and was hired as Nets coach shortly thereafter.
